Råcksta

Let the Right One In

Råcksta is the western-suburban destination that becomes Hakan Bengtsson’s new home. The novel introduces it through a subway announcement and the uncertain moment when he checks whether he should get off at the next station, making arrival—not a settled knowledge of the place—its defining first impression.

Setting and First Appearance

As Hakan rides toward his new home, the announcement names the next station as Råcksta. He looks at the subway map above the doors to confirm that this is where he is supposed to leave the train. The brief exchange between public announcement and private check presents Råcksta first as a point on a route: a place Hakan is approaching, but not yet one he knows.

Suburban Landscape and Narrative Role

Hakan finds the western suburbs somewhat ugly, though unlike the Stockholm-area districts he has seen on television. Råcksta’s surroundings also include the Waterworks’ administrative building, whose height catches his attention as he cranes his neck to see its upper floors. This contrast gives the arrival a measured uncertainty: the area is unfamiliar and imperfect, yet distinct from the image he had expected. Råcksta’s introduction anchors Hakan’s relocation in an ordinary suburban landscape, with the station announcement marking the threshold between his journey and the new home ahead.
