Solar Water Stills

Life of Pi

Solar Water Stills are a practical part of Pi’s struggle to secure fresh water at sea. Their importance lies not only in the water he collects from them, but also in the care their use demands and, during a storm, in their unexpected role in protecting his stored supplies.

Use and Water Storage

Pi collects water from the Solar Water Stills and keeps it with rainwater in the locker, out of Richard Parker’s sight. He stores both sources in three 50-litre plastic bags, seals them with string, wraps them in blankets to prevent them rubbing against the lifeboat’s metal hull, and moves them as little as possible. Even the bags’ necks worry him: damage there could make them difficult to seal. The routine makes clear that collecting fresh water is only part of the task; keeping it safely contained is another.

When rain is heavy, Pi fills every vessel available to him, from buckets and containers to beakers, cans, and plastic bags. He drinks directly from the rain-catcher tube if the rain continues. This is a separate source from the Solar Water Stills, but the two belong to the same precarious water economy: Pi adjusts how much seawater he adds to Richard Parker’s fresh water according to recent rainfall, and scarcity remains a persistent source of anxiety and suffering.

The Storm

As a major storm approaches, Pi brings the Solar Water Stills and the net aboard. The lifeboat and its attached raft are battered by enormous swells, and Pi uses both sea anchors to steady the boat. When a wave swamps it, he covers the lifeboat with the tarpaulin and holds on through the night. By morning, the raft is gone and much of the food has been lost or damaged.

The water bags, however, have not split. Pi attributes their staying in place to the net and Solar Water Stills, which he had not fully deflated: together they filled empty space and kept the bags from moving too much. The stills’ contribution here is not a fresh harvest but a material one. In a vessel repeatedly thrown about by the sea, the equipment helps preserve the water already collected.

Significance

The Solar Water Stills belong to a system in which survival depends on careful collection, storage, and protection rather than on any single device. Pi’s attention to the water bags shows how easily a supply can be lost even after it has been secured; the storm reveals that equipment can matter in more than one way, as the stills also help stabilize the bags. Their significance is therefore both practical and contingent: they serve Pi’s need for fresh water, while their physical presence aboard the lifeboat helps guard that supply when the sea threatens to undo his preparations.
