Aftermath
Laura wakes enough to crawl for water for Mary, but the family remains trapped in the fever.
Jack Leads Dr Tan to the Door

Jack Leads Dr Tan to the Door
Scene
A stranger appears at the house, drawn by Jack's unusual behavior. Dr Tan, a black man with a deep voice and soft eyes, says he is a doctor with the Indians on his way to Independence.
Meaning
Jack's instinct to trust the stranger saves the family. A dog's loyalty, often directed against Indians, here becomes an instrument of rescue.
Aftermath
Dr Tan gives Laura bitter medicine and stays with the family until Mrs Scott can arrive.
The Bitter Medicine

The Bitter Medicine
Scene
Laura opens her eyes and sees a black face close to hers. Dr Tan smiles and tells her to drink a bitter medicine so that she will get well, and Laura forces herself to swallow it.
Meaning
The medicine is Laura's first encounter with a Black man and with a healer from outside the settler world. Her fear gives way to trust.
Aftermath
She later wakes to see Mrs Scott by the fire and understands that rescue is underway.
Mrs Scott Takes Over Nursing

Mrs Scott Takes Over Nursing
Scene
Mrs Scott arrives and tells the family that Dr Tan stayed with them longer than expected before hurrying to care for other sick settlers. She continues the nursing work herself, cooking and tending the beds.
Meaning
The rescue becomes communal, one stranger and one neighbor working together. Their care is as important as the medicine.
Aftermath
Pa and Laura rise first, then Ma and Mary, and the family slowly begins to walk again.
Recovery and Gratitude

Recovery and Gratitude
Scene
Pa makes a chair for Ma while he recovers, and the family sits quietly in the house listening to his fiddle. They know Dr Tan found them just in time and that Mrs Scott kept them alive.
Meaning
The fever leaves the family weak but aware of the kindness of outsiders. Their gratitude deepens their sense of connection to the new country.
Aftermath
Once the family can care for itself, Mrs Scott goes home, and the normal work of the claim resumes.
