The Playwright's Introduction

The First Mention The Ad Humbert sees an ad for Dromes cigarettes featuring a playwright named Clare Quilty. Lolita remarks on the resemblance to the dentist. The Connection Quilty is a distant relative of Dr. Ivor Quilty, the Ramsdale dentist. He is already a successful playwright. The Shadow Quilty remains a background figure until he becomes Lolita's lover.

The Seduction of Lolita

The Grooming The Play Quilty writes 'The Enchanted Hunters' and attends rehearsals at Beardsley School. He charms Lolita and begins an affair. The Escape He orchestrates Lolita's escape from the hospital, posing as her uncle. He takes her to Duk Duk Ranch. The Exploitation At the ranch, Quilty involves Lolita in orgies. When she refuses to participate fully, he kicks her out.

The Cat-and-Mouse Game

The Taunting The Pseudonyms Quilty leaves a trail of mocking pseudonyms for Humbert to follow, enjoying the psychological torture. The Encounters He appears briefly at a tennis court and a hotel, always eluding capture. The Final Confrontation Humbert tracks him to Pavor Manor. Quilty, drugged and arrogant, is shot multiple times but dies slowly.

Death at Pavor Manor

The Murder The Struggle Quilty tries to talk his way out, but Humbert shoots him repeatedly. Quilty's death is messy and undignified. The Aftermath His body is found by friends who initially think it is a joke. Quilty's death ends the game. The Legacy Quilty is a foil to Humbert: both are artists and predators, but Quilty is more successful and less remorseful.
