Per Yngve Ohlin (Dead) suicide
Lords of ChaosDead’s death by suicide on 8 April 1991 ended the plans he had imagined for performances in Sweden and left an aftermath marked by Euronymous’s discovery of him and the eventual destruction of photographs taken that day. The account places the death in a house on Sørumveien Road in Kråkstad and identifies Dead as 21 years old.
Background and Death
The performances Dead had envisioned for his homeland of Sweden never took place. The account also notes that promises of live animal sacrifice and elaborate rites remained unrealized. On 8 April, Dead died by suicide in the house on Sørumveien Road. The ammunition used came from a weapon supplied by Varg Vikernes as a Christmas gift the previous year; this detail establishes the gift’s connection to the circumstances, not a motive for the death.
Discovery and Immediate Response
Euronymous found Dead after discovering that the door was locked and that the group had only one key. He entered through the open window of Dead’s room. After finding him, Euronymous went to the nearest store to buy a camera, took photographs, and then called the police. The account thus links discovery, photography, and the call to the authorities in that order, without describing the scene in graphic detail. Dead had left a brief note, which the narrative characterizes as sardonic.
Photographs and Aftermath
The photographs remained in the group’s possession until Euronymous was killed. His father then found them in Euronymous’s apartment and threw them away. Their disappearance closes the account’s thread of documentation: the images were made immediately after the discovery, kept for a time, and ultimately destroyed.
