Samhain

Lords of Chaos

Samhain was a band formed in the evolution of Glen Danzig’s early musical career: the punk group Misfits took on a heavier metal sound and began singing pagan hymns to dark forces in nature. In the book’s account, this middle phase connected the Misfits’ horror-centered punk beginnings to the later band Danzig, while carrying forward an enduring tension between impious performance and spiritual ambiguity.

Identity and Evolution

Samhain followed the Misfits, Glen Danzig’s punk band, whose songs turned away from the political concerns common among punk and hardcore peers. Instead, the Misfits drew on B-grade horror films and space aliens. Their early look was campy and ghoulish, featuring makeup and “Devil locks,” a pointed clump of hair falling in front of the face. The band’s progression was not simply a change of name: as the Misfits became Samhain, their sound absorbed more metal and their subject matter shifted toward pagan hymns to dark forces in nature.

Sound and Themes

Samhain’s musical development joined punk origins to a more metal-oriented sound. Its lyrical turn extended the Misfits’ fascination with the uncanny beyond horror-film imagery, toward nature and pagan darkness. The account presents this as a change in emphasis rather than evidence that the group shared a single defined doctrine: it identifies the themes in the songs but does not specify a formal belief system or describe the band’s internal organization.

From Samhain to Danzig

By 1988, the group had changed its name again, becoming Danzig. The sequence—Misfits, Samhain, then Danzig—makes Samhain a distinct transitional phase in the band’s history, not an isolated project in the account. The later Danzig continued to make impious, blues-based metal, which the book compares to Black Sabbath’s earlier balancing act between spiritual and moral ambiguity. That comparison places Samhain within a wider lineage of music that drew on dark or religiously charged material without reducing the band’s trajectory to a single, settled position.
