The Reunion

Lost and Found

The Reunion is the high-school gathering that turns a weekend of social performance into an unusually intimate interval for Bethany and Ransom. Its scheduled events, a worsening snowstorm, and the couple’s fabricated public identity keep drawing them together; the reunion’s eventual release of its attendees makes their separation feel newly imminent. Around classmates who once knew Bethany, the two enact a conspicuous romance even as Ransom pursues a private search through adoption records and the boundary between their arrangement and real attachment grows harder to hold.

The Bargain Behind the Weekend

The reunion begins for Bethany not with nostalgia but with a plan to make a striking impression on her former classmates. Ransom offers to pose as her boyfriend—or even husband—for the weekend in exchange for secure access to files connected to the agency where she works. He keeps the reason for wanting access to himself. Bethany considers the risk: she is letting a stranger stay at her parents’ house and may be sharing confidential work information. She nevertheless decides that his presence will complete the image of a successful life she wants to project, while telling herself she can fall back on cash or call the police if he proves untrustworthy.

That bargain gives the weekend two simultaneous purposes. Bethany wants a convincing romantic companion for the reunion; Ransom wants a route into records relevant to his own past. Their arrangement is therefore both a cover story for classmates and an exchange of trust, with Bethany’s professional access carrying stakes beyond the social performance. In public, Ransom helps present her as admired and desirable; in private, he depends on her permission to pursue information she does not yet know in full.

Snowbound, and Closer to the Crowd

The weather changes the reunion’s shape. Madison warns attendees that heavy snow may close the airport and roads out of town, forcing the group to move events indoors and perhaps stay an extra day or two. Bethany is less alarmed than many: she has driven to town and can work from home if necessary. As the temperature drops, Ransom lends her his jacket on their way to the car. The gesture belongs to the practical discomfort of the storm, but it also sits easily within the caring-couple image they are trying to maintain.

With the weather worsening and classmates staying at the hotel, Bethany and Ransom decide to move there too, reasoning that they might as well remain close to the center of the reunion rather than run around in the cold. The shared hotel setting intensifies their arrangement: they are presenting themselves as a couple while working out the realities of staying in one room, including where Ransom will sleep. When he leaves to retrieve belongings from the car, he considers snooping in Bethany’s room, though he rules out searching her underwear drawer. Their enforced proximity thus carries both domestic comedy and a quiet question of boundaries.

A Public Romance, a Private Search

At reunion gatherings, the cover story must survive conversation as well as appearances. When a classmate asks about Ransom, he jokes that he is Bethany’s arm candy and trades late-night treats for midnight feasts; Bethany supplies his cover as a chef and caterer. Their banter makes the invented relationship look relaxed, while also drawing on the food and cooking that recur in their interactions. Later, Ransom signs them up for activities, including a basketball event and hula, because he believes that joining in will make Bethany appear well-rounded and their romance more convincing. Jess encourages Bethany to follow through, and Ransom recognizes their familiar pattern of Jess urging her to try while Bethany worries about being embarrassed.

The storm rearranges the weekend but does not stop its performances. At dinner, Bethany and Ransom briefly enjoy talking without pretending to be in love; the arrival of classmates soon pushes them back into their couple role. At the fun fair, Ransom makes it his task to ensure that his fake girlfriend has real fun. During the luau, Bethany discovers that she enjoys the hula lesson and gets a chance to shine while Ransom is distracted. As the group eats from a large buffet of pork, salads, and seafood, she is also preoccupied with what he has learned from the agency’s databases and why the information seems to have put him in a mood.

The database access brings the weekend’s hidden purpose into sharper focus. Bethany gives Ransom access limited to the adopted-children database and the records site for parents who gave up children; she tells him not to try using the login elsewhere, lest she be locked out and have to explain. She authorizes him to use her laptop because the agency will recognize it as approved. Alone with it, Ransom opens Children Served by Us and searches under Patrick Nolan, a name he stopped using years earlier. The results initially show nothing, then return one match. This private discovery unfolds alongside the public reunion schedule, making the hotel room and borrowed computer as consequential to the weekend as its dances and meals.

The Dance and the Closing of the Interval

At the Clairmont Hotel ballroom dance, Bethany and Ransom work the room, greet classmates, and take photographs as the couple they have claimed to be. The early-2000s music and openly served alcohol distinguish the event from a high-school prom, but its social function remains familiar: the former classmates watch one another and read status in public. Bethany draws surprised looks, and she notices a classmate staring daggers at her. The image she hoped to present is working, but it is also exposed to gossip. She tells Ransom that classmates suspect she hired him from a modeling agency because, in their view, she is attractive but unsuccessful at life.

Ransom’s public proposal turns that rumor into a more elaborate spectacle. He sings his way through the crowd, kneels before Bethany, and asks her to marry him. She appears stunned, then accepts tearfully as he puts the ring on her finger; the room erupts in cheers. The proposal makes the couple’s performance look definitive to their classmates, and later reactions suggest that some who had suspected a paid arrangement have changed their minds. Bethany is embarrassed that classmates have also learned they were caught fooling around, but she recognizes that the incident reinforces the story she wanted them to believe.

The reunion’s ending brings the weekend’s central contradiction into view. Bethany believes that she and Ransom have little in common, live in different places, and will probably not keep in touch once they return to their separate lives. Then a class officer announces that the roads have been cleared and the airfield is running again: everyone can leave on schedule the next day. The news brings cheers, including from Bethany and Ransom, but it makes her sadder. She displays her ring and tries to prolong the dance, wanting to keep the pleasure and imagined life of the reunion a little longer. The storm had extended their shared interval; its departure makes the end of that interval harder to ignore.
