Leo and Bernhard’s confidentiality pact

Love Virtually

Leo and Bernhard’s confidentiality pact is a narrow, conditional agreement made after Bernhard has read emails between Leo and his wife, Emmi. Leo promises to keep Bernhard’s reading and his approach to Leo secret; in return, Bernhard promises not to read any further emails between Leo and Emmi. The pact limits one breach of privacy, but it does not bring the underlying relationship crisis to a resolution: Leo rejects Bernhard’s request for a meeting and directs him back toward an honest conversation with Emmi.

Circumstances and Terms

Bernhard writes to Leo after discovering the correspondence and asks him to meet Emmi. Leo responds by proposing a deal rather than accepting the invitation. He will not tell Emmi about Bernhard’s email or how it came about, provided Bernhard promises never again to read a message written by either correspondent to the other. Leo makes the promise explicit and stresses that he trusts Bernhard to honor his side of the arrangement.

The exchange establishes two separate acts of concealment and restraint. Leo undertakes not to disclose Bernhard’s intrusion to Emmi; Bernhard undertakes to stop intruding on the correspondence. Leo also warns that, if Bernhard refuses the deal, he will tell Emmi the secrets Bernhard has shared with him. The promise is therefore both a protection of the private exchange and a condition imposed on Bernhard’s access to it.

Bernhard’s Promise

Bernhard accepts Leo’s terms. He acknowledges that he has already read too many things he should not have read and promises not to read emails that are not addressed to him. His reply confirms the immediate effect of the pact: Leo’s disclosure to Emmi is held back, while Bernhard agrees to withdraw from the correspondence.

That acceptance does not end Bernhard’s involvement. In the same reply, he repeats his request that Leo meet Emmi. The contrast matters: Bernhard agrees to leave the emails unread but continues to seek a direct encounter between the two people whose connection has unsettled his marriage. The pact governs access to messages, not the larger question of what should happen between Leo and Emmi.

Leo’s Refusal and Counterproposal

Leo says he cannot answer Bernhard’s request to arrange a meeting, and that even if he could, he would not. He treats Bernhard’s email itself as a serious mistake and as evidence of a conspicuous flaw in the marriage, one he believes may have existed for years. In Leo’s view, Bernhard has approached the wrong person: he should have told Emmi what he has told Leo, and should have done so much earlier.

Leo’s response shifts the issue from managing the secret to addressing the marriage directly. He urges Bernhard to speak to Emmi now, asks him to make up for the delay, and asks him not to email again. He considers Bernhard’s disclosure excessive rather than a reason to become further involved. Thus the pact does not make Leo a mediator: he accepts a limited obligation of silence while refusing the role Bernhard wants him to play.

Scope and Significance

The agreement is deliberately confined. It does not require Leo to meet Emmi, disclose the correspondence, or help repair the marriage; nor does it settle the emotional bond between Leo and Emmi. Its terms concern who may read their emails and what Leo will reveal about Bernhard’s intervention. That distinction allows the correspondence to remain private from Bernhard while leaving its consequences unresolved.

The pact also exposes the instability of privacy in a relationship conducted through written messages. Bernhard’s ability to read the emails turns a private exchange into evidence within his marriage, while Leo’s promise temporarily contains the breach instead of revealing it to Emmi. But Leo’s final instruction points beyond secrecy: the relevant conversation, he argues, is the one Bernhard has avoided having with his wife. The agreement closes off one route of disclosure without providing an easy way out of the conflict.
