La Rochelle

Love in the Time of Cholera

La Rochelle is the destination of Fermina Daza and Juvenal Urbino’s voyage after their wedding and the threshold of their European travels. Their arrival follows an unsettled first passage at sea; by then, extended time together has helped them find ease with one another, and they proceed to Paris as the base for their stay in Europe.

The Wedding Voyage

The newly married couple were due to sail for La Rochelle the day after the wedding, but bad weather in the Caribbean brought the departure forward by twenty-four hours. The change was announced only three days in advance. Their reception consequently continued aboard the brightly lit ocean liner, where a Viennese orchestra played waltzes by Johann Strauss. The unexpected schedule made the ship both the setting of the celebration and the start of the couple’s married life together.

Arrival and European Travel

The crossing began badly for Fermina, who suffered from seasickness. Juvenal, a physician, stayed awake to comfort her, though his medical knowledge offered little relief from the voyage. After the storm abated, they spent time talking and grew comfortable enough with one another to feel like old friends. Their arrival at La Rochelle thus closes the difficult opening stretch of the passage, rather than serving as the end of their travels: they remained in Europe, using Paris as their base and making short trips to neighboring countries.

Significance in Their Marriage

The account links the couple’s change to two experiences that happen together: their life in Europe and their growing intimacy. By the time they reach La Rochelle, the distance between the formal wedding and their developing companionship has begun to narrow. The city is therefore a concrete waypoint in a journey that alters their relationship, leading from a wedding shaped by ceremony and uncertainty toward a life in which they come to understand one another more closely.
