Oil Lamp Alley
Love in the Time of CholeraOil Lamp Alley is the setting of a consequential misunderstanding between Florentino Ariza and Leona Cassiani: believing she is pursuing him romantically, he refuses her, only to learn that she wants a job. The encounter redirects her toward the River Company of the Caribbean and, in time, toward a position of influence within it.
Setting and Encounter
After leaving the mule-drawn trolley at the Plaza of the Carriages, Florentino walks through the crowded commercial district and then turns into Oil Lamp Alley. Leona follows him. To test his suspicion, he changes direction and enters the deserted alley; when she continues after him, he stops and blocks her path. The setting briefly strips away the crowd and turns his misreading into a face-to-face exchange.
The Misunderstanding
Florentino tells Leona, “You made a mistake, good-looking,” and says that he does not engage in the kind of encounter he assumes she wants. Leona replies that he does. He interprets her directness through his own assumptions about sexual secrecy and the women he has known, but her purpose is neither romance nor a paid sexual encounter: she is looking for work, at any salary, with the River Company of the Caribbean.
Consequences
Ashamed of his mistake, Florentino takes Leona to the company’s head of Personnel, who gives her a low-level post in the General Section. She performs the job seriously and modestly. The alley encounter therefore becomes the unlikely beginning of a professional connection, rather than an affair. In the years that follow, Leona’s abilities carry her into the company’s inner workings, and she helps Florentino advance even as her judgment and influence quietly exceed what he recognizes.
Narrative Significance
The episode makes Oil Lamp Alley a hinge between Florentino’s private expectations and Leona’s working life. His assumption briefly reduces her to a familiar category; the correction reveals a capable applicant whose ambitions are organizational, not romantic. The alley itself is only a short-lived meeting place, but the mistake made there has a long afterlife in their friendship and in the River Company of the Caribbean.
