Giovanni Gentile

M: Son of the Century

Giovanni Gentile is presented as the minister of public education whose influence reaches beyond schools into civic and cultural life. During an official visit to Siena, his opinion could affect the standing of the city’s university; at an exhibition opening in Venice, he became the target of an interruption that exposed a surviving fracture within the cultural order associated with Benito Mussolini’s government.

Minister of Public Education

Gentile’s school reform, focused on the humanities, had recently been approved. Benito Mussolini praised it as a major success of his government, while Benedetto Croce also spoke highly of Gentile. The reform therefore marks him not merely as an administrator but as a visible representative of the government’s educational ambitions.

The Siena Visit

During an official visit to Siena, Gentile was the guest of honor on whom the city’s authorities lavished attention. The stakes extended beyond ceremony: people in Rome appeared intent on downgrading Siena’s university, and the minister’s opinion was expected to be decisive in preventing that outcome. His presence placed educational authority at the center of a local institutional contest.

Interruption in Venice

At the opening ceremony of an exhibition featuring works by the Novecento art movement, Gentile’s momentum was interrupted by Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, who shouted, "down with backward-looking Venice!" The outburst briefly revived the disorder associated with Futurism, but the account treats it as comic and diminished: Marinetti was protesting because he had not been invited. The king, present at the ceremony, used the incident as an opportunity to leave the gallery early. Against this disruption, the exhibition’s carefully selected and displayed works helped establish the new cultural order promoted by Margherita Sarfatti and imposed by Benito Mussolini. Gentile’s interrupted address thus places him within that order, even as the scene shows that its public presentation could still be unsettled.
