Lake Garda

M: Son of the Century

Lake Garda is both the landscape of Gabriele D’Annunzio’s extended self-exile and the setting for a political approach that sought to redirect the fascist movement. In August 1921, the lake’s secluded villa at Gardone became the meeting place between the poet-warrior and two dissident fascists who wanted him to lead their challenge to Benito Mussolini.

Exile and Setting

D’Annunzio had spent eighteen months in self-exile on Lake Garda. His villa at Gardone was an enclosed, carefully arranged setting: heavy draperies and diffused light accommodated his photophobia, while its many books and objects formed an intricate display of symbolic references. The retreat was private, but it was not outside politics; it became a destination for representatives of a movement in conflict over its direction.

The August 1921 Approach

Italo Balbo and Dino Grandi left Bologna on the night of August 16, after Po Valley fascists had resolved to rebel against the pacification pact put forward by Benito Mussolini. Their journey to Lake Garda had a defined political purpose: they came to offer D’Annunzio the leadership of fascism. He received them at his villa on the morning of August 17, but first spoke at length about the definitive edition of a poetic meditation on death he was preparing. The work had been composed in 1916, during the temporary blindness that followed a crash landing in which his friend and pilot, Giuseppe Garassini Garbarino, was killed.

Deliberation and Narrative Significance

After discussing his work, D’Annunzio listened to the proposal in silence, offered the visitors hazelnut chocolates, and asked for one night to reflect. He explained that he would consult the stars before making a decision. The delegation spent that night at a lakeside pension, waiting while Grandi wrote to the conspirators. The episode makes Lake Garda more than a place of withdrawal: it is where a faction seeking an alternative to Mussolini’s leadership attempts to enlist D’Annunzio, and where the offer remains, for the moment, unanswered.
