An Empty Kingdom

Dyved Falls Silent
A sudden transformation
After Manawyddan settles in Dyved with Rhiannon, Pryderi, and Kicva, thunder and mist erase the people, livestock, and settlements from the land.
Four remain
The companions discover that only they have been spared. Their prosperity has disappeared without explanation, leaving them to hunt and forage in an apparently deserted country.
The Craftsmen’s Threats

Work Becomes Dangerous
A new livelihood
Manawyddan and his companions travel to Lloegyr and make saddles, shields, and shoes. Their superior work draws customers away from local craftsmen.
A repeated choice
When the threatened craftsmen plan violence, Manawyddan refuses to answer with bloodshed. The group repeatedly leaves town rather than turn economic rivalry into a feud.
The White Boar

A Castle Appears
A trail into the unknown
A white boar leads Pryderi’s dogs to a castle that was never there before. Pryderi enters despite Manawyddan’s warning.
The golden bowl
Pryderi grips an enchanted bowl and becomes fixed to it. Rhiannon follows to help and is trapped too, and the castle vanishes with both of them.
The Mouse in the Field

Crops Taken by Mice
A second assault
Mice strip Manawyddan’s wheat fields of their ears. He watches the last field and catches one unusually slow mouse.
Justice rather than vengeance
Though Rhiannon urges him to release it, Manawyddan prepares to hang the thief. His insistence draws increasingly valuable offers from strangers, revealing that the animal is no ordinary mouse.
Terms for Release

The Enchantment Is Broken
A confession and bargain
A bishop reveals that the mouse is Llwyd’s pregnant wife and that the mice are his household. Llwyd explains that the enchantment was revenge for Pwyll’s treatment of Gwawl.
Restoration with safeguards
Manawyddan secures the release of Pryderi and Rhiannon and the restoration of Dyved. He also demands that no vengeance follow, ending the crisis through negotiation.
