Kynon’s Defeat

A Tale of the Fountain
An unexplained challenge
Kynon recounts how he pours water on a fountain’s stone, summons a deadly storm, and loses a fight against its guardian knight.
Owain accepts the test
Rather than leave the mystery alone, Owain sets out to repeat the adventure. Kynon’s defeat becomes the map for Owain’s attempt.
The Guardian Defeated

A Different Outcome
The challenge repeated
Owain pours water on the marble slab and survives the storm that strips the tree. When the black-clad guardian arrives, Owain defeats him in combat.
A threshold crossed
The defeated knight reaches his castle, where the portcullis traps Owain. Victory has brought Owain to the center of a new danger rather than immediate safety.
Luned’s Assistance

Escape and Shelter
A ring conceals him
Luned gives Owain an invisibility ring, enabling him to evade the castle’s search party and follow her to a safe chamber.
A bargain with grief
Luned persuades the bereaved Countess that she needs a defender. Owain becomes the candidate to protect the territory whose former guardian he defeated.
Three Years of Rule

The Fountain Has a New Lord
A successful marriage
Owain marries the Countess and defends the Fountain against every challenger. His victories earn the affection of her subjects.
A new obligation neglected
After three years, Arthur’s absence from Owain’s life weighs heavily on the king. Owain receives permission to visit court, but promises to return after a limited stay.
The Return to Honor

Loss and Restoration
A broken promise
A messenger takes Owain’s ring and denounces him as faithless. Owain abandons court and lives among wild animals until a healing ointment restores him.
Service repairs the bond
Owain rescues Luned and others in peril, then returns to the Countess with proof of renewed character. His return makes reconciliation possible after absence had damaged trust.
