Karim Lala's thrashing of Shaukat Khan
Mafia Queens of MumbaiKarim Lala's thrashing of Shaukat Khan is the defining turning point in the life of Gangubai Kathiawadi, the moment a young sex worker in Mumbai's Kamathipura red-light district converts her helplessness into protection and, ultimately, into power. The beating itself is a brutal, public spectacle of underworld justice, but its consequences ripple far beyond the brothel room where it occurs. It transforms Gangubai from a victim of routine violence into the rakhi sister of one of south Mumbai's most feared gangsters, a connection that would lift her onto an entirely new pedestal and set her on the path to becoming a brothel madam, a political advocate, and a woman who would one day secure an appointment with the prime minister of India.
The Brutal Assault and Gangubai's Decision
The event is rooted in a cycle of violence that Gangubai had endured at the hands of a Pathan client. After a first assault, the Pathan returned a month later, drunk and more aggressive. When Gangubai was with another client, he threw the man out naked, latched the door, and brutalized her, leaving her body bruised and bitten all over. The ordeal was so severe that Gangubai had to be hospitalised and forced to lie in her room like an invalid for weeks. She was not only angry with herself for her helplessness but also with Sheela, the brothel madam, who had done nothing to solve her problem. After a bitter argument with Sheela, Gangubai took it upon herself to deal with the Pathan, realising that if she remained quiet, it would set a precedent for bigger problems in the future. Through one of her clients, she learnt that the man was called Shaukat Khan and was associated with the Karim Lala gang.
The Rakhi and the Alliance with Karim Lala
At the time, Abdul Karim Khan, known as Karim Lala, was still a small-time gangster, but he was known for being respectful towards women and headed a Pathan organisation called the Pakhtoon Jirgai Hind. Gangubai felt that if anything had to be done, it would have to be through him. Despite the other girls, including Sheela, trying to dissuade her because of his infamous activities and aggressiveness in south Mumbai, she remained obstinate. One Friday afternoon, when Karim Lala had just finished offering his Jumma namaaz and was walking towards his home at Tahir Manzil in Lamington Road, Gangubai accosted him, having waited outside Baida Galli, the lane that led to his home. She told him she was ready to be his mistress, but then declared she wanted to make him her brother. The Pathan ganglord was amazed at her impudence. He smiled, brought his hand forward, and allowed her to tie the thread, saying, 'You have my word on this. From now on you are my sister.' He then took a sweet from the snacks on the plate and fed her, asking, 'I hope you won't complain now.'
The Confrontation and the Beating
Karim Lala planted a mole right outside Sheela's brothel in Kamathipura, a young man who kept a check on all the customers who visited Gangubai on a daily basis. For days, there was no sign of Shaukat Khan, and Gangubai was disappointed, hoping he would come so Karim Lala could put him in his place. It was three weeks before he came to the brothel again. Gangubai sent a message through another sex worker to the mole, who rushed to Karim Lala's house on his cycle. Khan was more aggressive and vicious this time, but Gangubai decided to fully cooperate until Karim Lala came on the scene. In less than ten minutes, she heard a loud thumping on the door and an ominous voice shouting, 'Open the door!' Angry at another attempt to stall him, Khan slapped Gangubai and got up, little realising he would be confronted by none other than Karim Lala himself. Gangu rushed to cover herself with a sheet. Shaukat Khan's jaw dropped when he saw Lala and two other Pathans at the door with hockey sticks in their hands. He hurriedly put on his trousers and was looking for an escape when Karim Lala dragged him out of the brothel and started beating him mercilessly with the hockey stick. Khan tried to stop him and spoke to him in desperation in Pashtoon, accusing Karim Lala of going against his own race for a whore. This further angered Karim Lala, who kicked him hard in his stomach and knocked Khan on the head with the stick, thundering, 'Don't you dare call yourself a Pathan!' Finally, when Karim Lala was satisfied that he had broken enough bones to render Khan an invalid for weeks, he stopped and announced loudly, warning everyone in Kamathipura, 'Gangu is my rakhi sister. The next time anyone treats her badly, I will kill them.'
Consequences and Gangubai's Rise
From then on, things changed for Gangubai. People in Kamathipura started treating her differently, and her connection with the most feared gangster in south Mumbai put her on another pedestal altogether. Nobody, not even Sheela, dared to take advantage of her. An entirely new world opened up to Gangubai. Under the tutelage of her rakhi brother, she began to develop strong ties with the Nagpada police and the underworld. When Sheela suddenly passed away some time later, people coaxed Gangubai to stand for the customary local gharwali elections. She immediately agreed, hoping that this would put paid to her job as a prostitute. It came as no surprise when she won the election and went on to become a brothel madam at a very young age. This new status would eventually lead her to spearhead a movement against the evacuation of sex workers from Kamathipura, to give a famous speech at Azad Maidan, and to secure an appointment with Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, becoming the only local brothel madam to do so.
Narrative Significance
The thrashing of Shaukat Khan is a masterclass in the performance of power and the forging of protective bonds in the underworld. It demonstrates how a woman, seemingly powerless, could strategically navigate the patriarchal structures of the mafia to secure her own safety and advancement. The event also establishes the rakhi as a powerful symbol of protection, a bond that transcended the usual client-madam relationship and gave Gangubai a legitimacy and a shield that no other sex worker in Kamathipura possessed. The scene's raw violence, the public humiliation of Khan, and the explicit warning to the entire community underscore the brutal logic of the underworld, where reputation and fear are the ultimate currencies. For Gangubai, the beating was not just an act of revenge; it was the foundational event of her transformation into the 'Queen of Kamathipura'.
