A Professional Boundary

Protection Without Attachment
A job defined narrowly
Creasy regards Pinta as an “asset” to protect and insists that he is not a companion or nursemaid. His wartime experience has taught him to keep emotional distance from vulnerable children.
The boundary weakens
Pinta’s patient questions and open-minded interest gradually draw him into conversation. The job remains formal on the surface, but the child begins to matter to him as a person.
A New Routine

Protection Becomes Companionship
Shared days
Creasy teaches Pinta to improve her sprint start, gives her a book and takes her to meet Guido’s family. Their conversations make her feel taken seriously and give Creasy a role beyond guarding.
A living purpose
He cuts back his drinking, begins rebuilding his fitness and takes pleasure in her growing mind. The relationship gives him a reason to care about what happens next.
The Abduction at the Piano Lesson

The Guard’s Failure
A sudden attack
A car blocks Pinta’s path as she leaves her piano lesson. Creasy shoots two attackers but hesitates when Pinta is caught in the line of fire, and the kidnappers escape with her.
Wounded and helpless
The attackers shoot Creasy in the stomach and lung. His inability to stop the abduction turns the protector’s professional failure into a devastating personal wound.
The Hospital Question

One Name First
Pinta before himself
When Creasy can speak, he first asks whether Pinta has been found. Only afterward does he listen to the medical account of his own wounds.
No acceptable remedy
He rejects the idea that the kidnappers will face proportionate punishment through the courts. The girl’s fate becomes the measure by which every decision about his recovery and future is judged.
A Final Duty

Protection Recast as Vengeance
The target reached
Creasy breaks into Villa Colacci and confronts Cantarella directly. He kills the boss who stood at the top of the chain responsible for Pinta’s death.
The cost of completion
Creasy is shot repeatedly as the remaining guards enter the study. His final act fulfills the promise to retaliate, but the protector who failed to save Pinta cannot survive the punishment he has chosen.
