A Child of Hunger

Survival in Naples
Leaving home
After his father dies, young Guido walks from Positano to Naples in search of food. He learns to beg, steal and assess people because survival cannot wait for moral instruction.
A talent for command
By adolescence, he leads other street children and turns boldness into authority. His early violence becomes a method for controlling danger and securing a place in a city with few protections for the poor.
Power and Prison

A Young Criminal’s Reversal
A failed alliance
Guido builds a profitable criminal position through extortion and theft at the docks. He backs the wrong faction in a Neapolitan power struggle and is badly wounded.
Captivity becomes intolerable
After prison intensifies his claustrophobia, Guido concludes that being caught cannot happen again. A warning that authorities are coming forces him to flee rather than trust the courts.
A New Orphanage

The Legion as Refuge
A life without papers
With little money and no safe path home, Guido enlists in the French Foreign Legion. Its discipline and training give structure to a life previously governed by hunger and factional violence.
Finding a companion
In the 1st R.E.P., Guido meets Creasy. Their shared reserve and military seriousness develop into a durable bond, even though neither man is inclined to express friendship conventionally.
From Soldier to Husband

A Different Life in Naples
Fighting beyond the Legion
After the regiment is disbanded, Guido and Creasy fight as mercenaries in Africa and Asia. Their partnership lasts through repeated wars and captivity.
A home on Gozo
In Gozo, Guido meets Julia and chooses marriage and a quieter life. He returns to Naples, turns his property into Pensione Splendide and forms a family life that Creasy can visit without being asked to explain himself.
A Friend’s Last Request

Loyalty Without the Gun
Material and intelligence
Guido arranges transportation, safe houses, weapons and information for Creasy’s campaign. He understands the stakes but refuses to kill again, honoring a promise made to Julia.
A life left behind
After Creasy dies, Guido attends the funeral with his family and continues the work and relationships that Creasy’s violence interrupted. His loyalty endures without requiring him to return to the life he renounced.
