Cardarelli Hospital

Man on Fire

Cardarelli Hospital is a Naples medical institution whose importance in the novel emerges through two distinct connections: Mario Satta’s work there as a senior surgeon and the hospital’s role in Creasy’s final treatment. It is presented not through a general portrait of its operations, but through specific acts of professional intervention and care.

Institutional Role

Mario Satta is identified as a professor and senior surgeon at Cardarelli Hospital. His position there is also connected to a private act of assistance: after Massimo Bellu’s younger sister was denied admission to study medicine at Catanzaro University despite being well-qualified, Satta intervened, and the university reversed its decision. Bellu learned only after his sister had begun the course that Satta had helped her. The episode shows Satta using the standing associated with his medical career to help someone whose family lacked influential connections.

Creasy’s Transfer and Treatment

After the Battle of Palermo, Creasy lay in intensive care in Palermo with little chance of survival. He remained alive through the first two weeks, then was flown to Naples on a special Carabinieri aircraft at Satta’s instigation. Cardarelli Hospital was chosen because it was better equipped than the Palermo hospital and offered greater security. Its role therefore extended beyond treatment: the transfer placed Creasy in a facility considered both medically better suited to his injuries and more secure.

The Medical Effort and Its Outcome

Satta’s brother led the team of doctors treating Creasy at Cardarelli Hospital. The team fought hard and initially had hope, but the injuries proved too severe, even for a patient determined to live. Creasy’s death follows this prolonged effort, making the hospital the final setting for the novel’s distinction between persistence and recovery: skilled care and sustained intervention could keep him alive for a time, but could not undo the damage.
