Valley Center

Match Point

Valley Center is the town, about forty-five minutes north of San Diego, where Luca Russo finds Hazel Reyno dead in her trailer. The visit begins as an attempt to identify the person whose name appeared on a threatening message to Willa Ashford, but it turns the town into a crucial site in the investigation of the threats against her.

Setting and Investigation

Colt Fontaine sends Luca to Hazel’s home after the threatening voice message on Willa’s phone is associated with her name. Hazel’s phone is off, preventing the team from tracing her current location, so Luca follows directions to a trailer park on the outskirts of Valley Center. He drives slowly along its dirt road and finds the address among a dilapidated fence, scraggly trees, and the rusted shell of an old Ford.

Discovery at Hazel Reyno’s Trailer

The door opens before Luca can knock. Inside, he recognizes the cloying smell of death and finds Hazel, seventy-two, lying on the orange shag carpet. He checks the rest of the trailer for other victims, taking care not to disturb the body. An overflowing litter box and a cat-food bowl suggest an animal may also be inside, but Luca cannot find the cat. He photographs the scene and calls the police, drawing on his experience as a former detective to avoid contaminating evidence.

Connection to the Threats

Luca reports the discovery to Colt, and the two believe Hazel’s death is connected to the threats against Willa. Later, a purported confession attributed to Drew Black claims that its writer murdered a woman in Valley Center. Willa subsequently identifies the confession as Corey Baxter’s work, part of his effort to blame Drew for the crimes. That reversal makes the location part of the novel’s pattern of misleading evidence: Hazel’s death is real, but the document that appears to explain it cannot be trusted as Drew’s account.
