Willa Ashford—Vic Bello

Match Point

Willa Ashford and Vic Bello’s relationship is the story’s central coaching partnership: he helps her return to competition after grief drove her from the sport, then guides her through the technical and emotional demands of a last-chance Olympic qualifier. Their bond is grounded less in grand declarations than in repeated acts of preparation and trust. Vic gives Willa a way back onto the sand; she, in turn, comes to see coaching as a future of her own.

Coach and former player

Before her return, Willa had already discovered that her attachment to volleyball could survive the end of her playing career. After Colleen’s disappearance and presumed death, she hung up her bikini and took an unpaid assistant coaching position at a high school. Teaching young players came naturally to her, and she considered looking for a permanent position, perhaps even as a head coach. She loved both beach and indoor volleyball, so coaching offered a way to remain close to the game without asking her to replace the partner she had lost.

When prominent executives, sponsors, and donors asked Willa to return, the request carried stakes beyond her own career: the upcoming tournament in Serenidad was the last chance for a United States team to earn a place in the next Olympic Games. Willa did not decide alone. She spent time soul-searching and had many conversations with Vic before agreeing to compete, framing the decision partly as a responsibility to the legacy she and Colleen had built. His counsel helps turn a painful possibility into a choice she can act on.

Building a new team

Vic’s role then becomes practical and exacting. He and Willa review videos of possible partners and look for a player whose style might complement hers. Tabby enters the selection process late, after Denise Salazar breaks two bones in her leg; she is the strongest available option and eagerly accepts the chance to play with Willa. The new pair has only six days to develop enough chemistry to face the best teams in the world, making Vic’s judgment and planning especially consequential.

He does not mistake individual talent for partnership. Willa herself warns that being good players will not automatically make her and Tabby a good team; chemistry matters, as her experience with Colleen taught her. Vic’s preparations include a schedule that positions matches as tests of the new pairing. Before a match against Lydia Zeller and Suzette Nupiere, he describes the challenge as severe but sees it as an opportunity to assess the partnership. Willa and Tabby win in two sets, and Suzette tells them they will do well together. The result gives evidence, rather than certainty, that the short-term plan may work.

Strategy and emotional support

Vic’s coaching attends to both the game and the player returning to it. He schedules mental coaches during the demanding week of preparation, including a session arranged separately for Willa and Tabby. Willa suspects that one meeting has been timed with her in mind: Vic knows how difficult it is for her to take the court without Colleen. The adjustment comes gradually, but each day on the sand becomes a little easier. His support does not erase her grief; it makes room for her to compete while carrying it.

His technical authority is equally visible in the way he studies opponents. After Anja is shot, Willa thinks of Vic staying up through the night to assemble tapes of Pua and Sina and devise a strategy. She considers him the best coach in the world and imagines that players would line up to learn from him. In a video session, Vic shows Willa and Tabby footage of the Serenidad team, catches minute errors, and explains how to exploit them. His close analysis makes his love of the work plain. For Willa, this competence is not abstract: it is the method by which he turns a formidable opponent into a set of readable choices.

Confidence on the court

Their relationship also appears in small gestures during competition. As Willa prepares to serve in the Olympic final with Colleen, Colleen gives the familiar double-thumbs-up signal they used before winning their first gold. Later, on her comeback, Willa often glances toward Colt for reassurance; at a separate match, his thumbs-up steadies her. Vic’s bond with Willa is specifically that of coach and athlete, but these scenes establish how much the return depends on a circle of support rather than willpower alone. Vic’s preparation, the mental coaching he arranges, and his attention to Willa’s adjustment all help her make the court feel playable again.

When the tournament schedule brings Willa and Tabby before international competition, Willa recognizes how far their partnership has progressed since they first arrived. She can imagine what they might become with more time, perhaps dominant in the way she once was with Colleen. Vic’s work has helped produce that possibility, but it cannot promise the old partnership’s return: Tabby is a different player, and the purpose of the training is to help Willa meet the present rather than recreate the past.

A changed future for Willa

By the end of the story, Willa’s direction within volleyball changes again. When Colleen asks whether she will play, Willa says she will not. The tournament could not be completed, and even if the Olympic Committee grants a special entry, someone else will have to compete. Willa looks from the net to the stands and the ocean beyond, recognizing that the happiest stretch of her life on the sand has ended. The decision is not a rejection of the sport or of Vic’s coaching; it is a limit she sets after returning and competing under extraordinary pressure.

Willa tells Colleen that she plans to start coaching. Colleen points out that Willa coached her through two Olympic Games, while Willa insists Colleen needed little advice and recalls how much she enjoyed coaching before teaming up with Tabby. The exchange reveals a continuity beneath the change in roles: Willa’s knowledge has always been part of her athletic identity, and Vic’s example has shown the precision and commitment that coaching requires. She has not said whether she will become one of Vic’s students or work alongside him. What is established is that his guidance helped her return, while her next step carries the game forward in a different capacity.
