Illyan and Miles After Betrayal

Miles and Illyan’s long professional trust is damaged by Miles’s deception, then tested and partly renewed through Illyan’s crisis and recovery.

A Mentor’s Faith

Trust Built over Years A shared history Illyan has directed Miles’s covert career for years, demanding exact reports while entrusting him with difficult assignments. Miles sees him as both commander and foster uncle, a relationship deeper than formal rank. A dangerous confidence That history makes Miles’s secret especially consequential. He believes Illyan would remove him from field duty if told about the seizures, and chooses concealment rather than trusting his mentor with the truth.

The Professional Betrayal

The Report Becomes a Wound Confrontation Illyan presents the medical records and the falsified account of Vorberg’s injury. He tells Miles that the deception betrayed both the subordinates who depended on him and the superiors who trusted him. A painful judgment Miles resigns rather than contest the evidence. Illyan’s grief is visible beneath his control, and his quiet statement after the resignation shows that this victory costs him personally.

The Request for Miles

A Familiar Face Needed Repeated appeals Illyan asks for Miles during periods of lucidity, even though he cannot consistently remember the dismissal. Vorberg has to carry the request through a chain that never brings Miles the message. Family obligation When Miles learns what has happened, he sees the request as more than a medical detail. Illyan’s decades of service to his father and the Imperium make Miles feel responsible for reaching him.

The Decision to Remove the Chip

Choosing Illyan over the Record The impossible choice The doctors cannot preserve the failing chip without risking further damage to Illyan. Miles rejects the institutional instinct to save the data first and recommends removing it. Trust returned Gregor approves the operation, and Illyan later accepts that Miles made the decision. His brief assent restores a measure of trust even though neither man can undo the circumstances that brought them there.

Companions in Retirement

A Different Kind of Company Learning ordinary days Illyan convalesces at the family house, plays cards, talks with old acquaintances, and goes fishing with Miles. The relationship becomes less strictly commander and subordinate as Illyan faces a future beyond the office. Shared limits Miles tells Illyan that survival does not require another performance of heroic victory. Illyan, in turn, recognizes that Miles has survived the loss of Naismith and can still choose what follows.
