An Office Beyond Routine

A Different Kind of Authority
A solution to obstruction
Miles asks Gregor for an Auditor to protect his inquiry from ImpSec resistance. Gregor recognizes that the office is more than a shield: it can investigate where normal command structures fail.
Power outside the chart
Gregor appoints Miles as an acting Auditor. The unusual authority lets him enter ImpSec as an examiner rather than a subordinate, exposing the limits of hierarchy when the institution must investigate itself.
The Unannounced Visit

Testing the Appointment
A formal demand
Miles arrives at the gate with Imperial Armsmen and requests that Haroche meet him. He takes care not to force the guards to choose between an order and an act that might constitute treason.
Authority acknowledged
Haroche recognizes the chain and receives Miles in his office. The exchange demonstrates that the Auditor’s authority can compel cooperation, even when the person under examination distrusts the examiner.
The Auditor’s Uncomfortable Power

Oversight Cuts Both Ways
Suspicion acknowledged
Haroche tells Miles that he suspects him of involvement in Illyan’s breakdown. The accusation forces Miles to confront how easily his new authority might look like self-protection.
A duty to investigate fairly
Miles does not use the appointment to silence Haroche or remove him without process. He keeps the inquiry open to evidence, even though the suspect may be trying to manipulate him.
The Offer of Another Office

Refusing the Easy Promotion
A chiefship offered
Gregor offers Miles the vacant position of Chief of Imperial Security. Miles can imagine doing the work, but understands that the job would confine him to routines and crises he does not want.
A meaningful refusal
He recommends Guy Allegre instead. His refusal distinguishes service from status: a position is not automatically right merely because it is prestigious or offered by the Emperor.
A Permanent Place Among Auditors

The Appointment Becomes Real
Collegial judgment
Four Auditors review Miles’s work and discuss his record, his errors, and his refusal of Haroche’s bribe. They value both his experience and his willingness to acknowledge what he did wrong.
A life in unanticipated work
Gregor offers him a permanent Auditor’s post. Miles accepts, entering an office defined by unusual crises rather than a conventional promotion ladder or a guaranteed return to military command.
