A Name as Burden

The Future Count
Inherited rooms
The empty ancestral home makes Miles imagine the future in which he will become Count. He has spent years defining himself against his grandfather, his father, and the expectations attached to his name.
A distorted measure
Military service once seemed to offer a way to prove that his achievements belonged to him alone. Losing that service forces him to confront what remains when the uniform can no longer serve as his primary identity.
The District as a Hidden Cost

Service Draws from Home
An inherited landscape
Miles sees the radioactive wasteland of Vorkosigan Vashnoi and the recovering forests of his District. He realizes that generations of Vorkosigans have been taken away to serve the Imperium without replacing what the District gives up.
A new perspective on duty
His family’s service now appears not only as personal glory but as a hidden tax on the people at home. The observation complicates his inherited pride with a responsibility to those who remain.
The Grave He Stops Addressing

A Changed Conversation with Piotr
Old appeals fall silent
Miles visits Piotr’s grave and discovers that he no longer has anything to demand from the dead general. The old need to prove himself to his grandfather has lost its force.
A living obligation emerges
He recognizes that he has been looking for an answer in the wrong grave. His next step is to seek Harra, a living person whose experience can speak to present loss rather than inherited judgment.
Choosing the House Uniform

Wearing the Name Publicly
A deliberate change
Miles puts on the brown-and-silver Vorkosigan uniform and arranges his decorations on it. Instead of hiding behind a military identity, he appears as the heir whose authority derives from family and Imperial law.
A stance of resistance
He accepts that he cannot command Haroche as a lieutenant. He can, however, act through his inherited relationship to Gregor and the Auditor’s office, using the structures he once tried to escape.
An Unprecedented Auditor

A New Family Precedent
A role outside the old pattern
Miles becomes the first Vorkosigan to serve as an Imperial Auditor. His new office draws on his family’s political position without repeating the familiar path of military command.
Inheritance reinterpreted
He calls himself unprecedented, and his father agrees that this is no surprise. Miles can now belong to the Vorkosigan line without treating that belonging as the enemy of his own achievement.
