A Rescue Refused Berto judges that recovery is too dangerous for an Expendable and says he will file the loss report. Nasha offers to attempt a rescue, but Mickey7 discourages her because he will not risk her sole life for his. He intends to accept a replacement as the practical consequence of his job, then changes his mind about dying and walks into the tunnels. That choice is the first step toward the duplication crisis neither he nor the colony anticipated.

The Unexpected Survivor A Labyrinth Below the Ice Mickey7 finds a network of warm, artificial-looking tunnels and encounters a giant creeper that carries him through its underground territory. Instead of devouring him, the creature leaves him near an exit not far from the colony dome. A Secret Kept Mickey7 returns to the perimeter alive, though Berto has already assumed he died and initiated a new version. He withholds his survival long enough to reach his bunk and avoid alerting Command before he understands what has happened.
