The Rule Against Antimatter
Mickey7The history of the Bubble War, Gault, and the Union’s prohibitions clarifies why a colony’s improvised weapons threaten more than their immediate target.

The Bubble War Begins

A New Weapon in a Fractured World
Antimatter Becomes Usable
Old Earth develops large-scale antimatter production and magnetic containment. The technology promises propulsion and energy, but its destructive possibilities quickly attract war planners.
A World Already Under Strain
Political fragmentation and ecological crisis make the weapon especially dangerous. The Bubble War lasts less than three weeks, involves only a fraction of the world’s political entities, and leaves more than half of the population dead or dying.
The catastrophe gives the later Union a collective warning: technological power can make conquest appear efficient while making ordinary life impossible afterward. The fear of repeating that history survives in law and custom.
A Ban After Catastrophe

Weapons Excluded From the Diaspora
The Lesson of Concentrated Power
The survivors of the Bubble War spread humanity across distant worlds, partly because remaining on one planet seemed to invite another exterminating conflict. The same history makes them determined not to carry antimatter weapons into the new settlements.
A Shared Prohibition
The Union ostracizes Old Earth and treats antimatter weapon use as an offense that could justify overwhelming retaliation. The taboo is deeper than many other laws because it is tied to humanity’s near-destruction.
The rule is not simply a technical restriction. It is an attempt to prevent the Diaspora from recreating, among its scattered colonies, the weapon system that made one world’s political divisions fatal.
Manikova Builds an Army

Replication Becomes Rule
A Colony Fragmented
Gault’s settlers live in separate family enclaves under a doctrine of Radical Liberty and Self Reliance. Alan Manikova arrives with resources and technology, then begins producing copies of himself.
Theft and Conquest
When he runs out of feedstock, Manikova abducts inhabitants and turns their bodies into material for more copies. He arms his growing population and attacks neighboring clans until he becomes the majority on the planet.
The event makes simultaneous multiples a public danger rather than a philosophical puzzle. A technology that could preserve one person’s memories becomes a mechanism for taking other people’s bodies and accumulating force.
Gault’s Destruction

Retaliation at Relativistic Speed
The Battle Lost
Eden’s Justice arrives too late to prevent Manikova from preparing defenses, and nuclear-tipped missiles destroy the expedition. Farhome then sends The Bullet, a relativistic object that strikes Gault with catastrophic energy.
A Planet Made Uninhabitable
The impact devastates the ecosystem and becomes one of the Union’s most severe crimes. Manikova’s aggression is blamed for the chain of events, but the response demonstrates that a struggle over replication can end with an entire world destroyed.
The catastrophe hangs over the Mickey7–Mickey8 crisis. It explains why the colony reacts so violently to a second Mickey, even though the brothers’ accident is not comparable to Manikova’s conquest.
The Bombs Enter Niflheim

A Forbidden Choice Reappears
Command Authorizes the Weapon
Facing a threat from below, Hieronymus Marshall turns fuel from the Drakkar into antimatter bubble bombs and orders them used against the creepers. The colony’s immediate fear overrides the Union’s prohibition.
Mickey7 Refuses to Detonate
Mickey7 recognizes the intended strike as mass extermination and chooses conversation instead. He returns with one device, hides another, and uses the danger of the bombs to keep Command from simply restarting the attack.
The history of Old Earth and Gault makes the scene more than a local tactical choice. Niflheim risks repeating a pattern in which fear authorizes a weapon whose consequences outlast the people who first deploy it.
