The Thawing Colony

A Planet Misread

An Observation Mistaken
Variable Starlight
Mission planners observe changes in Niflheim’s stellar output but attribute them to interstellar dust rather than to a variable star. The assumption makes the target appear warmer and more reliable than it is.
Arrival in Ice
When the colonists finally see the planet, they find a snowball rather than the hospitable world they expected. They land because reaching another target is almost impossible and because biological intervention might improve conditions over time.
The mismatch begins the colony’s environmental crisis before the first local organism is tested. Its difficult conditions are not simply bad luck; they also reflect the limits of observation and the confidence with which uncertain evidence was interpreted.
Growing Things Fail

Agriculture Under Strain
A Poor Growing Environment
The dome’s hydroponics cannot reliably produce crops, and local atmospheric conditions may interfere with plant growth. Agriculture has no confirmed explanation for the failing vines and small, unhealthy fruit.
Hunger Becomes Routine
As production remains weak, the colony reduces rations. Mickey and Mickey8 find that even their combined daily allowance barely supports two bodies, while others depend on increasingly limited stores.
The agricultural problem exposes the difference between possessing advanced equipment and being able to build a self-sustaining ecology. The colony’s future cannot be secured by technical optimism alone.
The First Signs of Spring

Green Appears Through Snow
A Sudden Seasonal Shift
The temperature rises and the snow melts, revealing soil and lichen. The colony has not expected meaningful seasons on a world with a nearly circular orbit and little axial tilt.
A Possible Opening
The change gives Agriculture a chance to establish an outdoor plot and offers the colony a little relief from its sealed environment. The settlers suspect a cycle in the star’s output, but cannot know how long the favorable conditions will last.
Spring is evidence of possibility, not a promise of stable habitability. Its value lies in giving the colony time to learn what the planet can support.
Life Returns Quickly

A Biosphere Emerges
The Landscape Fills In
Lichen gives way to grasslike growth, shrubs, and small animals after only a short period without snow. Mickey and Nasha see a reptile-like animal near exposed rock, while the colony’s assumptions about an empty world become harder to maintain.
Danger and Wonder Together
Nasha keeps a hand near her Burner, having learned how quickly unfamiliar life can become dangerous. Mickey sees the landscape as something more than a hostile background, even though he cannot be sure how the truce fits into it.
The thaw reveals a living world rather than a blank resource. Any plan for settlement now depends on whether humans can share space with organisms whose relationships and needs they do not yet understand.
A Walk With No Resolution

A Future Still in Question
Leaving the Perimeter
Mickey and Nasha walk beyond the dome in rebreathers, passing new vegetation and signs of animal life. The setting is gentler than the earlier snowfields, but the colony remains dependent on equipment and a fragile truce.
The Hidden Bomb
Mickey reveals the concealed antimatter bomb and admits that he has no durable plan for keeping it safe. Nasha challenges him but accepts that concealment may be preferable to returning it to Command.
The scene refuses a simple happy ending. Environmental recovery gives the colony a chance, while the hidden weapon preserves a danger that could destroy both human settlement and the possibility of coexistence.
