A Doctrine Against Copies

One Soul, One Body
Marshall’s Belief
Mickey learns that Hieronymus Marshall belongs to the Natalist Church, whose doctrine treats each soul as belonging to one body. A reconstructed Expendable is therefore considered an abomination rather than a continuation of a person.
Social Isolation
Many colonists share some version of the stigma, and Mickey learns that others may approach him because of a ghost-chaser fascination rather than genuine companionship. He adapts by keeping to himself.
The doctrine shapes more than religious debate. It determines whether people consider Mickey worthy of ordinary recognition, even while the expedition depends on the technology they condemn.
Manikova’s Precedent

The Horror Behind the Rule
Copies Used for Power
Alan Manikova develops reliable mind replication, then uses copies of himself to dominate Gault. He turns captured people into raw material and multiplies his own military force.
A Taboo Becomes Political
The destruction of Gault and the history of the response make multiple copies socially abhorrent across the Union. The prohibition reflects a real fear that replication could enable conquest, not merely a theological dislike of technology.
The precedent gives the law a moral foundation but also makes it blunt. The history of a tyrant’s deliberate army is easily invoked against two accidental copies who are trying to survive a ration crisis.
An Accident Becomes a Crime

Survival Violates the Rule
A Systemic Assumption Fails
Berto Gomez reports Mickey7 lost and requests a replacement under protocol. Mickey7’s unexpected return means that two living bodies now bear the same registered identity.
Punishment Before Understanding
The colony’s first response is to decide that one Mickey must be recycled. Command considers the extra person a threat to scarce food, doctrine, and orderly identity, before examining the circumstances that produced the duplication.
The event exposes the gap between protecting society from deliberate abuse and punishing people for an accidental overlap. A prohibition designed for catastrophic misuse becomes an immediate threat to ordinary survival.
Cat’s Replacement Offer

A Rule Finds a Volunteer
The Colony Needs a Successor
After learning that the creepers possess military technology, Command has reason to keep an Expendable available. Cat Chen offers to take the position if the two Mickeys are destroyed.
People Reduced to Roles
The offer lets Hieronymus Marshall imagine that the colony can enforce the ban without losing a necessary function. Mickey and Mickey8 face disposal, while Cat risks accepting the dangerous job in their place.
The moment shows that institutional labels distribute vulnerability. Cat’s willingness is real, but the colony’s response still treats the Expendable berth as a slot to fill rather than a life that deserves consent.
Two Lives, Not One Threat

The Human Scale of the Taboo
A Contained Crisis
Mickey7 and Mickey8’s coexistence ends when Mickey8 dies, but the short period of sharing a body history has changed how Mickey7 understands the ban. A second copy was not an army or a plan for conquest; he was a hungry person with the same past and a different present.
Historical Fear, Present Judgment
The Union’s history gives the prohibition understandable force, yet the case of the two brothers demands more particular judgment than the category allows. Mickey’s survival depends partly on his ability to show that an accident does not equal an expansionist project.
The novel does not dismiss the danger of replication. It asks whether a society can remember that danger without making every individual who resembles its worst history into an acceptable sacrifice.
