A Strange Underground World

Evidence Beneath the Snow
Tunnels Without a Geological Cause
Mickey7 discovers a branching network of warm tunnels below the ice, despite orbital surveys suggesting no volcanism or geological explanation for such passages. The carefully repeated geometry suggests deliberate construction rather than ordinary cave formation.
A Different Kind of Encounter
A giant creeper captures him but carries him instead of eating him, eventually placing him near a way back to the surface. The act resembles release more than predation, though Mickey7 cannot yet explain its meaning.
The episode gives him evidence that the creatures may have purposes and social behavior beyond the colony’s assumptions. He keeps that evidence to himself while the colony continues to regard them as dangerous animals.
The Colony Sees an Enemy

Fear Becomes Policy
A Lost Guard
Security discovers that Gabe Torricelli has disappeared near the perimeter. The discovery follows Mickey7’s return through the same dangerous region, making him suspect that the creepers may have followed him toward the dome.
Evidence of Capability
A later attack damages the main lock and reveals that the creatures can penetrate the colony’s metal defenses. Hieronymus Marshall orders armed searches and demands a specimen for study.
The colony interprets each new danger as proof of hostile intent. Its defensive response may protect people in the short term, but it also makes the creepers’ motives harder to understand and raises the stakes of every encounter.
The Snipe Hunt

Hunting for a Specimen
An Armed Expedition
Dugan joins Security and Mickey7 outside the dome to capture a creeper for laboratory study. Mickey7 warns that heavy armor will bog its wearer down in deep snow, but the expedition proceeds with the colony’s usual confidence in equipment and firepower.
A Failed Rescue
Creepers attack from beneath the snow and overwhelm Dugan and two Security officers. Mickey7 escapes with Cat Chen and brings back part of a specimen, while Berto Gomez and Nasha provide extraction and air cover.
The failed mission confirms the creatures’ ability to defeat conventional human tactics. It also deepens the pattern of mutual fear: the colony sees a threat to its survival, while the creatures remain unexplained and unconsulted casualties of a human operation.
Military Technology Confirmed

The Threat Changes Category
A Hybrid Specimen
Laboratory examination shows that the returned creeper specimen is not fully biological. Its body incorporates military technology, clarifying how the creatures can cut through decking and overcome armored humans.
A Colony on War Footing
Hieronymus Marshall treats the discovery as confirmation that the colony faces a technologically capable enemy. Security restricts movement, patrols intensify, and Command begins considering an extermination operation.
The discovery is real, but the conclusion of inevitable war is not. The creepers’ capacity for technology does not tell the humans what they want, how they organize, or whether they understand human ideas of injury and retaliation.
A Truce Through Communication

A Shared Language Begins
The Question of Prime
After Mickey8 dies, a giant creeper approaches Mickey7 and communicates through fragments of text transmitted over his ocular. It asks whether he is “Prime,” apparently distinguishing him from the other Mickey as an individual of a different status.
Recognition Without Certainty
Mickey7 answers and begins a conversation, using the limited language the creatures have acquired by observing human communications. He learns that the small creepers are ancillaries within a collective intelligence, and that their assumptions about individual humans are badly mistaken.
Mickey7 secures a fragile truce based on distance and noninterference, not a fully shared understanding. First contact replaces the simple enemy narrative with a difficult possibility: survival may depend on allowing time for mutual comprehension.
