A Weapon With Two Owners Fuel Recast as a Bomb Hieronymus Marshall authorizes the creation of two devices using antimatter from the Drakkar’s remaining stores. Each device could sterilize a city, making the operation far more destructive than an ordinary military raid. A Mission Without Consent Mickey7 and Mickey8 are ordered to carry the devices into the tunnels and detonate them. Their participation is framed as the price of avoiding immediate death at the hands of Command. The plan transforms the colony’s scarce energy supply into a potential weapon against an underground population it has not yet tried to understand. Mickey7 recognizes that the mission may become a crime even if Command calls it necessary defense.

Carrying Extermination Underground Back to the Crevasse Berto Gomez flies the two Mickeys to a crevasse and lowers them into the tunnels. Before descending, Mickey7 asks Berto to explain what happened to Mickey6 and learns that the earlier version was taken underground rather than simply killed by a swarm. Berto’s Confession Berto admits that fear kept him from rescuing either Mickey. His confession reveals that reports about the Expendable’s deaths have concealed uncomfortable choices, not merely unavoidable accidents. The pair proceeds with the mission, each carrying a bomb. Mickey7’s private knowledge of the creatures’ possible intelligence and his distrust of Command make the descent a moral crisis as well as a physical one.

A Community in the Tunnel Numbers Without Faces Mickey7 receives an image of a cavern filled with thousands of creepers. The scale makes the planned detonation no longer an abstract strike against a few attackers; it would destroy an entire underground community. The Second Bomb Lost Mickey8’s messages cease, and a final image shows the creature that has reached him. Mickey7 realizes that his counterpart has died before triggering the device. The lost signal leaves Mickey7 alone with the remaining bomb and the full decision. He can still execute the mission, but the evidence now points toward a mass killing rather than a defensive encounter with isolated predators.

The Trigger Unpulled A Question Instead of Detonation Mickey7 stands in the tunnel with his hand on the trigger and sees the approaching creeper as a possible interlocutor. A garbled message asks whether he is Prime and whether he understands what has happened to an “Ancillary.” A Different Use of the Moment Mickey7 identifies himself as Prime and chooses to communicate rather than set off the bomb. The creature lowers its mandibles and says it is Prime too, opening a tentative exchange. This decision does not prove that either side fully understands the other. It does prevent the planned attack from being carried out immediately and creates a basis for a truce that might outlast fear if both communities can hold back.
The Bomb Hidden AwayThe Bomb Hidden Away from "Mickey7". A Deterrent Buried in Stone Returning to the Colony Mickey7 returns with one bomb, while the other remains with the creepers.
A Deterrent Buried in Stone Returning to the Colony Mickey7 returns with one bomb, while the other remains with the creepers. To prevent Hieronymus Marshall from using his return as an opportunity to restart extermination, Mickey7 lets Command believe the creatures possess both devices. Nasha’s Walk in Spring After the snow recedes, Mickey7 takes Nasha to the place where he hid the second bomb. He explains that he concealed it to protect her and to prevent the colony from controlling both weapons. The bomb remains a dangerous secret, not a permanent solution. Its concealment preserves the truce for now, but Mickey7 has no reliable plan for a future in which Command, the creepers, or an accidental discovery changes the balance.
