The Colony’s Narrow Survival
Mickey7Niflheim’s food scarcity and repeated losses expose how fragile the beachhead is, while incremental environmental change offers survival without guaranteeing it.

A Snowball at Arrival

The Destination in View
A White Planet
The Drakkar’s colonists expect a potentially habitable world but see a featureless sphere of ice when the planet first appears on the viewscreen. Nasha and Mickey Barnes understand that water and an oxygen-nitrogen atmosphere may still make settlement possible, but neither is certain.
A Decision to Stay
The expedition already faces the cost of reaching another target, and Command debates whether the climate can be overcome. Biology argues that engineered algae might eventually improve the atmosphere, and Hieronymus Marshall decides to proceed.
The landing is less a confident founding than a commitment under constrained options. The colony’s survival will depend on whether its adults can endure a world whose apparent promise hides a severe mismatch between conditions and expectation.
The First Biological Trial

Testing the Air and Life
The Isolation Chamber
The first lander carries a Biological isolation chamber and a team prepared to test local microbes. Mickey Barnes is placed inside and exposed to samples because the colony uses its Expendable to find hazards before they reach everyone else.
A Costly Method
Mickey becomes ill within hours and dies while Nasha stays beside him. The procedure produces knowledge for the expedition, but it asks one person to endure an illness in a way that cannot be made humane simply by preserving a backup.
The trial sets a pattern for the colony: uncertainty is met through exposure, and survival information is gathered through Mickey’s repeated bodily sacrifice. The policy becomes ordinary before the risks become emotionally ordinary to anyone close to him.
Rations Tighten

Calories Become Governance
Production Fails
The colony’s hydroponics struggle, and the harsh climate offers few dependable local food sources. Command cuts rations repeatedly as the settlement tries to stretch its supplies through an uncertain growing season.
Two Bodies, One Allowance
When Mickey8 appears, the duplication crisis makes each missing calorie visible. The two Mickeys divide a ration intended for one, while a disciplinary cut from Hieronymus Marshall makes their survival harder still.
The colony’s food policy is practical but also coercive: an administrative decision can turn a secret into a daily physical ordeal. Scarcity intensifies the conflict between what the colony needs and whether two people with the same memories can both claim a life.
Losses Become a Crisis

A Population at Risk
Deaths Outside the Dome
Creeper attacks kill colonists and compromise the colony’s ability to work outside. The failed hunt takes Dugan and two Security officers, while a previous disappearance and damage to the main lock show that the threat can reach critical infrastructure.
Viability Under Pressure
Hieronymus Marshall notes that the adult population is approaching the minimum for a viable beachhead. The colony cannot afford many more casualties, yet its response risks escalating conflict with the local intelligence it has not understood.
The loss of people is not merely a series of personal tragedies. It threatens the labor, expertise, and reproductive future on which the entire settlement depends, making every tactical choice carry colony-wide consequences.
A Spring Without Guarantees

An Unexpected Thaw
The Landscape Changes
Temperatures rise, snow melts, and lichen and early plant growth appear across the exposed ground. No one can explain the season confidently, though the colony suspects its star varies more than planners expected.
A Cautious Walk
Nasha and Mickey leave the dome in rebreathers and see signs of a recovering or newly visible biosphere. The change gives Agriculture a chance to experiment outdoors, but it does not prove the climate will remain favorable or that the creepers have disappeared.
The thaw offers relief without closure. Niflheim may become more hospitable, yet the colony’s future remains dependent on ecological conditions it cannot control and on a truce it cannot fully verify.
