Gwen Snyder
Missing YouGwen Snyder is Hannah Snyder’s mother, and the account of her home life shapes Rob Wilkins’s decision to seek temporary guardianship of Hannah. Later, Gwen’s conversations with Rob help reveal that Hannah had misled them both, making Gwen an important part of the story’s shift from a presumed family crisis to a more complicated deception.
Family Circumstances and Hannah’s Visit
Rob describes Gwen’s household to Jessica Mastriani as a troubling place for Hannah to grow up. According to him, Gwen was involved with drugs and men, and Hannah had said that some of those men made her uncomfortable with their attention. Rob judged the situation unsafe and began looking into becoming Hannah’s legal guardian until she turned eighteen. With school out, Gwen agreed that Hannah could visit Rob, although Rob believed Gwen did not want her around.
Hannah’s account later proves unreliable. Jessica recognizes that Hannah had used allegations about her mother’s boyfriends to persuade Rob to take her in, while Hannah pursued a relationship with Randy Whitehead Jr. Rob subsequently confirms that Hannah had misrepresented what was happening at home. The story therefore does not establish Gwen’s household through an independent account from Gwen; it presents the claims first through Rob and then reframes them through the discovery of Hannah’s deception.
Contact with Rob and Hannah’s Return
When Jessica brings a humbled Hannah back to Rob’s house, Rob is already speaking by phone with Gwen. He tells Gwen that Hannah has arrived and says he does not know whether she is all right. He then offers the phone to Hannah, explaining that her mother wants to speak with her. Hannah’s face crumples; instead of taking part in the conversation, she runs upstairs crying and slams a bedroom door.
Rob ends the call after telling Gwen that Hannah is upset and that he will speak with her before calling back. The scene shows Gwen maintaining contact with her daughter through Rob even as Hannah refuses the immediate opportunity to talk. It also places Gwen in the family’s response to Hannah’s return, without suggesting that she is present at Rob’s house.
The Deception Comes into Focus
Later, Rob tells Jessica that he and Gwen have been talking and that both had been deceived by Hannah. He reports that Hannah told Gwen he was suicidal over a girl and had begged her to stay for a few weeks to give him a reason to live. This false account had helped Hannah shape how her mother understood the visit, just as her claims about Gwen’s home life had influenced Rob.
Gwen’s role remains largely indirect: the reader learns what she said and did through Rob and Jessica, rather than through a scene narrated from her perspective. Still, her agreement to Hannah’s visit and her later conversations with Rob mark her as a participant in the effort to understand what Hannah needs and what has actually happened. The contrast between the alarming story Rob initially believed and the manipulation he and Gwen later recognize makes the family’s situation less straightforward than it first appeared.
