Jessica chooses to stay in Indiana

Missing You

Jessica Mastriani’s decision to stay in Indiana marks a change in both her professional direction and her personal life: rather than return to New York or resume her former work, she plans to teach, earn her teaching certificate, and build a future with Rob Wilkins. The decision takes shape against an earlier uncertainty about whether she can remain in the same town as Rob without being with him, and becomes explicit in separate conversations with Ruth and Cyrus Krantz before Jessica announces it to Karen Sue.

A Decision Formed Between Two Futures

The choice begins as a question Jessica has not yet answered. Ruth asks whether she is coming home, and Jessica admits that she does not know. She has not told Ruth about Douglas Mastriani’s offer of a teaching job at his new alternative high school. The offer gives her a possible life in Indiana beyond her previous work, but it does not settle the more personal difficulty: Rob also lives there, and Jessica is unsure she can stay in town without being with him.

That hesitation makes the decision more than a choice between jobs or locations. The possibility of teaching is already present, but so is the emotional cost Jessica associates with remaining near Rob. Ruth urges her to ask him directly, then tells her to get some sleep; the call ends before Jessica reports any answer or resolution. The scene leaves her choice open, showing that the teaching offer alone has not yet turned uncertainty into commitment.

Refusing a Return to Her Former Work

When Cyrus Krantz visits, Jessica makes clear that she does not intend to come back. He asks whether she means returning to work for his organization or returning to New York. She answers that she means both. Her response closes off two versions of the same return: resuming the work he represents and going back to the city associated with it.

Cyrus says he has not come to recruit her. Instead, he tells her that he and the others have worried about her and are glad she is feeling better. He recognizes her relationship with Rob and asks whether she will accept her brother’s offer to teach. Jessica answers yes, though guardedly, and specifies her plan: she will transfer to Indiana and get her teaching certificate. Her guardedness registers the surprise of hearing that Cyrus is not asking her to return; it does not undo the directness of her answer about teaching.

Cyrus’s response frames the decision as Jessica’s to make. He acknowledges that the organization pushed her too hard and that the pressure left her with nothing more to give. Now that her psychic abilities have returned, he says, she is under no obligation to use them again; her other strengths can also serve her wish to improve the world. His words distinguish the return of an ability from a duty to put it to work. Jessica’s choice of teaching therefore does not depend on denying her former work or her powers: she is permitted to decide what kind of contribution she wants to make.

Staying in Indiana

Jessica’s decision becomes public in a brief exchange with Karen Sue. Karen Sue asks when Jessica is leaving for New York, and Jessica answers that she is never going back. Asked why she is staying, she identifies herself as engaged to a local business owner and invites Karen Sue to call her. The announcement supplies the personal certainty missing from the earlier call with Ruth: Jessica is not merely considering a local teaching job but has decided to remain in Indiana while engaged to Rob.

The scene plays the news as a reversal of expectation. Karen Sue’s mouth falls open; after Jessica drives away, she is still sitting openmouthed at the traffic light, with cars behind her honking. Jessica’s news interrupts the ordinary movement of the road and leaves its listener visibly stunned. The decisive information is not that Jessica has already completed a move or a teaching certificate, but that she has rejected departure and declared her intention to stay.

A Different Use of Her Strengths

The decision connects Jessica’s future to work with children without presenting teaching as a substitute Cyrus can impose on her. He recalls that she was excellent with children, recognizes the damage caused when the organization pushed her beyond what she could give, and explicitly leaves the use of her restored abilities to her. Jessica accepts the teaching path on her own terms: transfer to Indiana, obtain the credential, and take up the offer from Douglas.

The contrast between Cyrus’s visit and Jessica’s announcement clarifies the scope of her choice. She refuses both a return to New York and a return to the organization, while remaining committed to doing useful work through a different role. At the same time, her engagement to Rob gives staying a personal dimension that had been the source of her hesitation. The ending gathers the strands without suggesting that every practical step is finished: Jessica has stated where she will stay, what work she intends to pursue, and with whom she plans to share that future.
