The Agent Approaches
A Rule Broken for Control
Agent No. BLW/553/c meets Momo with Lola, the Living Doll, intending to divert her from her friends. He believes that consumer temptation and an argument about success can neutralize her influence.
The approach violates a central Gray Men commandment to leave children until last. His decision puts the secrecy of the organization at risk even as he claims to serve it.
A Confession Under Attention

A Confession Under Attention
The Mask Fails
Momo asks whether anyone loves the agent, and her listening draws out a confession about stolen time and the need to remain unnoticed. The agent appears horrified as his own words escape him.
His exposure reveals that the Gray Men are not ordinary human beings and that their survival depends on unrecognized theft. He flees, but the organization will not treat his disclosure as an accident.
A Secret Testimony

A Secret Testimony
The Court Convenes
Beppo witnesses a Gray Men tribunal at the Municipal Garbage Dump. The judges question the agent about the children's march and his conversation with Momo.
Agent No. BLW/553/c admits that he violated the commandment against approaching children. He tries to defend his motives, but the tribunal cares about the threat his action created, not his intentions.

The Price of Failure
The court finds the agent guilty of high treason and sentences him to lose all time. His briefcase and cigar are taken away, removing the supports on which his existence depends.
The punishment makes the Gray Men's system visible in its most brutal form. An organization that steals time from others offers no mercy to an agent who has become inconvenient.

Ash in the Wind
Erasure Completed
Without his cigar, the condemned agent becomes transparent and dissolves into a flurry of ash. The tribunal disperses, leaving Beppo with direct knowledge that the Gray Men exist.
The agent's fate foreshadows what happens to the rest of the organization when its supply of stolen time is cut off. His erasure changes Beppo's understanding of the danger but does not yet give him a way to fight it.
