A Street Beyond Ordinary Time
A Different Kind of Place
Momo reaches a district of white houses and unnatural shadows, where the streets are empty and still. The Tortoise leads her into Never Lane, a narrow street of pearl-like buildings.
The lane is unlike the city she knows. Its rules do not reward haste, and Momo cannot reach the house at the end by moving forward as she normally would.

A Current Against Her
Momo feels an invisible force pushing her backward as she struggles toward the tortoise. Each step forward becomes a fight against a powerful current.
The physical difficulty makes the lane's unusual time rule immediate rather than theoretical. Momo cannot overcome it by trying harder in the usual direction.
Walking Backward

Walking Backward
Time Reverses with the Body
Cassiopeia advises Momo to walk backward. Once she turns around, she moves easily and experiences her thinking, breathing, and living as if they too are going backward.
Her passage suggests that access to Nowhere House requires a willingness to move against ordinary habits. The direction that looks wrong is the one that makes progress possible.

Time Flows Outward
When the Gray Men try to enter Never Lane, the first agents disappear. Professor Hora later explains that time flows out of beings there, and the thieves consist only of stolen time.
Humans survive the reversal because they are more than the time they carry. The lane therefore protects the house by dissolving the very substance that makes the Gray Men exist.

A Door Left Open
When time stops, Never Lane's reverse flow also stops, allowing the Gray Men to reach Nowhere House. Momo's earlier preparation has left the doors open, unintentionally letting them inside.
The protection of the lane depends on time continuing to move. Its changed rule initiates the final confrontation and shows that even a reliable safeguard can fail when the conditions governing it are altered.
