The Protective Brother

The Protective Brother
Family reduced to two
After their mother’s death, Tommy remains fiercely attached to Daisy and worries about her safety in the workhouse. He and his sister have lost their home as well as their parent.
A shared dream
Sunday becomes part of their small circle of trust. Tommy speaks of carpentry and imagines a life beyond the workhouse, while Sunday promises that they will find a way out together.
A Place at the Lodge

A Place at the Lodge
Work with purpose
Tommy leaves the workhouse for a position at Whittleford Lodge, where his interest in carpentry and outdoor work can be put to use. The new role offers more than the failed farm placement he had endured before.
Belonging restored
He tends the gardens and animals, helping the household thrive. Living near Daisy and Sunday allows him to recover a sense of family life after the harsh separation of the workhouse.
The Loss of Daisy

The Loss of Daisy
A frantic search
When Daisy disappears, Tommy searches through foul weather with Jacob and then joins the police at the mortuary. He has already feared for his sister’s safety, but the identification makes his worst expectation real.
Grief without answers
The death is treated as an accident, leaving Tommy with no explanation for Daisy’s despair or death. He withdraws into work and memory, holding onto her room as a place of closeness to the sister he has lost.
Flight from the Lodge

Flight from the Lodge
Grief becomes departure
Unable to live comfortably among reminders of Daisy, Tommy leaves Whittleford Lodge without telling the others in person. His note thanks Biddy Spooner but gives no settled destination.
A long absence
Sunday and the household worry when his letters do not come. His departure deepens the loneliness left by Daisy’s death, even as Tommy needs distance to understand his own grief.
A Return and Proposal

A Return and Proposal
Rebuilding his life
Tommy returns after finding work as a carpenter’s apprentice and renting a small home. He visits Sunday at Yew Tree Farm, where he sees that she is being mistreated and learns of her worries about her birth.
Love made explicit
When Sunday escapes the farm, Tommy gives her refuge and hears her out. After rescuing her from Miss Frost, he proposes; Sunday accepts, and their partnership helps make her foundling-home dream possible.
