Euston station

Mothering Sunday

Euston station is the London railway setting where Sunday Small’s first experience of the capital’s scale becomes immediate and physical. Smoke gathered high in the rafters, porters hurried through the crowds with trolleys, and the station’s busy exit opened onto a city whose traffic and buildings far exceeded anything Sunday knew from home.

Setting and Arrival

Sunday, Biddy Spooner, and Jacob stepped down from their carriage into a station filled with passengers issuing orders and porters moving between trains. The smoke from the engines had risen into a fog beneath the rafters, giving the enclosed arrival space a hazy, crowded atmosphere. The station is presented through Sunday’s first encounter with London rather than through a broader description of its history or layout.

From the Station into London

Biddy warned Sunday to stay close: in such a crowd, she said, they might otherwise lose sight of one another. Sunday pressed herself against the older woman while Jacob summoned a porter to retrieve their belongings from the luggage van. Once the luggage was brought back, the three picked their way toward the exit.

Outside, Sunday found the streets just as overwhelming. Market day at home had seemed busy, but it could not compare with the crowds and traffic beyond the station. A huge church rose across the way, while horse-drawn carriages clattered along the highway nose to tail. Jacob appeared at ease: he stepped into the road, hailed a cab, and gave the driver the name of their hotel in Westminster. The driver loaded their luggage onto the rear hold, and the party continued by cab.

Narrative Significance

The station marks a threshold between Sunday’s familiar home surroundings and the unfamiliar city she is eager to explore. Her instinct to stay close to Biddy, and her intense attention to the view from the cab, set apprehension beside curiosity. Biddy, meanwhile, noticed the grubby straw on the cab floor and wondered when it had last been cleaned; Sunday was too intent on watching London pass outside the window to share her concern.
