The Yorkville Stakeout

The Yorkville Stakeout
An unexplained assignment
Lionel Essrog and Gilbert Coney watch the Yorkville Zendo because Frank Minna sent them there without explaining why. A woman enters, and Minna later arrives to meet someone inside.
A divided investigation
Minna gives Lionel a listening assignment through Frank Minna’s surveillance wire and monitor. Lionel catches references to Ullman and a downtown meeting, but the meaning remains hidden from him.
The Lost Pursuit

The Lost Pursuit
A false message
A doorman diverts Lionel’s attention with a message from an unnamed visitor. While Lionel tries to sort out the interruption, Frank Minna leaves with an enormous stranger in a car.
Too late to intervene
Lionel and Gilbert Coney follow through traffic and across the Pulaski Bridge, guided by fragments over the wire. Their pursuit reaches the industrial streets near Harry Brainum Jr. steel-sheet factory building, but they cannot prevent the attack.
The Bloody Discovery

The Bloody Discovery
Finding the signal
The wire goes quiet, and Lionel searches the industrial block for a trace of Frank Minna. He finds Minna’s torn equipment near a Dumpster and follows the signs to the container.
Rescue without recovery
Lionel and Gilbert Coney find Frank Minna badly wounded and rush him to Brooklyn Hospital. Their discovery makes the stakes unmistakable, but it does not give them a name for the attacker.
A Clue at the Hospital

A Clue at the Hospital
A final name
At the hospital, Frank Minna avoids explaining the attack and instead engages Lionel in their familiar ritual of jokes. His dying reference to a joke’s punch line leaves Lionel with the name Irving.
Clues outlive certainty
Frank Minna dies before Lionel can clarify what the name means. Lionel preserves the small notes from the stakeout, including Ullman downtown, and begins treating them as the beginnings of a case.
The Trail to Maine

The Trail to Maine
A hidden destination
After confronting Gerard Minna and learning about Fujisaki’s interests, Lionel follows Tony Vermonte and the Giant Killer north. Their route points toward Yoshii’s and the Maine coast.
A compromised pursuit
Lionel reaches Musconguspoint Station and learns that Tony and the Giant Killer have gone by boat toward Muscongus Island. He is no longer merely reconstructing Frank Minna’s murder: he is racing to stop another killing.
