Lucius Seminole
Motherless BrooklynLucius Seminole is a homicide detective who confronts Lionel Essrog and Tony Vermonte at gunpoint while they are in a car. His arrival turns an apparent roadside stop into an interrogation, and his questions connect Frank Minna’s death, Ullman’s murder, and a woman’s departure for Boston to the investigation unfolding around the two men.
Identity and Jurisdiction
Seminole identifies himself as a detective, not an officer, and gives his name as Lucius Seminole, asking Tony to address him as Detective Seminole. His authority in the case comes from Minna’s death at Brooklyn Hospital: because Lionel and Tony brought Minna there, Seminole explains, the death falls within his jurisdiction. He adds that he does not often work on their side of Flatbush Avenue and knows little about the neighborhood, though he is learning it.
Armed Intervention
Seminole’s first appearance is deliberately abrupt. As Lionel and Tony are in the car, a gun muzzle taps the driver’s-side window. The arm holding it extends from behind the trunk of an elm tree, and Seminole’s head appears as he orders both men to get out slowly. The weapon and concealed position make the encounter an ambush; Seminole immediately controls the scene and its pace.
Questions and Investigation
Seminole says he has already spoken with Lionel the previous night. Lionel’s talk had nearly driven him crazy, so this time Seminole wants answers from Tony, whom he casts as the more direct speaker. His questions place the men’s activities against the murders he is investigating: Ullman had kept books for a Manhattan property-management firm, and Gilbert Coney shot him through the skull. Seminole regards the apparent retaliation as quick work and tells Tony that he is impressed by it.
Seminole then turns back to Lionel and asks about the woman who went to Boston, referring to her as Mrs. Deadguy. The question redirects the interrogation from the murders to a departure that Lionel’s earlier conversation had not resolved for him. Tony’s surprise at the mention of Boston leaves the question hanging between the two men, while Lionel falls back on repeating that they are a detective agency.
