Army and Navy Stores
Mrs DallowayArmy and Navy Stores is a London department store encountered by Doris Kilman and Elizabeth Dalloway during a shopping trip. The visit turns an ordinary errand into a compact study of their unequal closeness: Elizabeth guides Kilman through the store, while Kilman’s thoughts remain divided between religious instruction, resentment, and the comfort she seeks in food and clothing.
Setting and Visit
Elizabeth turns into the store’s tobacco department while Kilman is still repeating ideas she has heard from Mr. Whittaker about suffering and the flesh. When Elizabeth asks which department she wants, Kilman answers abruptly that she wants petticoats and goes directly to the lift. The store’s departments make the women’s immediate purpose concrete even as Kilman’s attention remains elsewhere.
Shopping and Unequal Companionship
In the petticoat department, Elizabeth guides Kilman from place to place as she chooses among garments in differing colors, patterns, and textures. The shop assistant thinks Kilman seems mad, while Elizabeth wonders what is occupying her thoughts. After the parcel is wrapped, Kilman gathers herself and says they must have tea; the shopping trip continues into another ordinary social ritual rather than resolving the strain between them.
At tea, Kilman watches the sugared cakes and wants a pink one. When a woman and child sit nearby and the child takes it, Kilman minds its loss. The episode presents eating as one of the few pleasures she feels she can rely on, and the store visit thus belongs to a broader pattern in which material comforts matter intensely to her.
Relationship and Narrative Significance
The visit also reveals the imbalance in Kilman and Elizabeth’s association. Elizabeth accompanies and guides Kilman, but Kilman’s attachment to her is more urgent: as Elizabeth looks for her white gloves and prepares to go, Kilman cannot bear the prospect of her leaving. The store is therefore more than a backdrop for shopping. Its distinct departments, parcels, and tea table structure a brief encounter in which everyday consumption offers Kilman comfort, while Elizabeth’s ability to move on exposes the limits of their intimacy.
