Chicago Loop district

Native Son

The Chicago Loop enters the novel as a destination in Bigger Thomas’s account of driving Mary Dalton. His answers place it within the sequence of her abandoning the expected trip to school and directing him elsewhere, but the account supplies only a street and an uncertain number, not a fuller description of the district.

Place in Bigger’s Account

Asked whether he drove Mary to school, Bigger says he did not. He reports that after they had gone as far as the park, Mary told him to turn around and take her to the Chicago Loop. Under further questioning from Britten, he identifies Lake Street as their destination within the district.

Address and Narrative Significance

When asked for the number, Bigger answers that he thinks it was sixteen, making the address explicitly uncertain. The exchange establishes how specifically he can describe the destination while leaving that detail unresolved. In the account, the Chicago Loop marks Mary’s change of plan: she does not continue to school, but directs Bigger to Lake Street instead.
