Battle at the White Glove Academy
New Life as a Max Level ArchmageThe Battle at the White Glove Academy is Vivisari Vexaria’s disastrous but revealing return to the estate that has become the Academy for the Domestic Arts and Establishment of Excellent Service. What begins as a confrontation with a commanding combat maid becomes an escalating duel against five White Gloves, exposing the extraordinary gap between Vivisari’s power and the academy’s defenses while also showing that her greatest danger is not malice but unrestrained enthusiasm. The ruined grounds, their instantaneous restoration, and Winston’s composed welcome transform an apparent invasion into a collision between Vivisari’s old home and the institution built in her absence.
Causes and Setting
The encounter takes place as Vivisari Vexaria approaches the palatial manor and discovers that her former home is crowded with maids and butlers who train across its grounds as though they own it. The scene carries the shock of recognition before it carries the logic of battle: Vivisari is overwhelmed by seeing the estate physically present, yet she cannot immediately understand why it is occupied or why its servants behave like a disciplined military body. The academy’s identity is therefore initially hidden in plain sight. Its grounds are still her home, but they have been reorganized into a fortified school for White Gloves.
At the manor stairs, a tall, thin, gray-haired woman with her hair in a bun strides out and stops Vivisari by command alone. This woman is Constance, the academy’s Deputy Headmistress, a First Class White Glove and a Titled combatant. Her authority is presented as neither ordinary hostility nor uncontrolled aggression; she gives an order with the unquestioned force of a general, and Vivisari obeys instinctively. The confrontation begins because the academy treats the returning owner as an unidentified intruder, while Vivisari has not yet recognized the purpose or legitimacy of the people occupying her estate.
The Duel Escalates
Constance’s status immediately makes the encounter exceptional. She is a super-elite, Titled-rank combat maid, and Vivisari is fascinated by the prospect of seeing what Winston’s pupil can do after the century of Vivisari’s absence. Vivisari is not seeking an opportunity to display power. Instead, she deliberately intends to use only enough strength to push Constance toward her limits, turning the battle into a test of Winston’s instruction and the academy’s cultivated talent.
Constance manifests an ornate silver battle-axe from a cloud of silvery mist and attacks with a weapon so massive that its effortless weight becomes part of the spectacle. When Vivisari continues to fail to answer her, Constance’s restraint ends. Her later assault is driven by bloodlust rather than the measured attacks that preceded it. She crosses the forecourt with such speed that an observer can follow her only in flashes, while missed or redirected blows rip huge gashes through the manicured yard. The force of the duel shakes fruit from the trees and snaps branches, making the academy’s cultivated grounds collateral damage before Vivisari’s own magic begins erasing physical matter.
The battle also establishes Vivisari as a mage rather than merely a superior physical combatant. She sends orbs of black flame toward Constance, and wherever the void-fire detonates, several feet of ground vanish entirely. Vivisari has prepared a safeguard in case her experiment goes too far: Elethelea’s Saving Grace, the highest-tier spell she has cast since entering the world, protects Constance from death by known attacks while leaving her badly injured if the contingency must activate. This precaution prevents the spar from becoming an execution, but it does not prevent Vivisari from treating the fight as an exhilarating examination.
The contest expands when a White Glove with blonde pigtails and twin daggers enters from nowhere, her golden crescents breaking against Vivisari’s Prismatic Barrier with enough force to make the ground tremble. A butler attacks with a black steel rapier, followed by two more White Gloves. Vivisari is suddenly fighting five opponents at once, with even the weakest newcomer possessing Titled-level strength. Her response is delight: the unexpected multiplication of the challenge sends her excitement to its highest point, and the academy’s defense becomes, from her perspective, an ideal test rather than a reason to retreat.
Witnesses and the Collapse of Order
The academy has never before hosted an uninvited party, and the duel becomes a public spectacle for its students and instructors. Nicole watches from a second-floor balcony with three classmates, while Etiquette Instructor Annabelle, ordinarily an exemplar of White Glove dignity, angles her seat for a better view. Nicole considers this adjustment not a loss of composure but an act of common sense. Constance losing while defending the academy seems almost impossible, yet the intruder has also bypassed the enchantments laid by Vivisari herself around the former residence. The spectators therefore face two improbable facts at once: the academy’s strongest defender may be outmatched, and its founder’s own protections have failed to identify or repel the returning woman.
Constance’s anger is legible in a minute change of posture, her tightened grip and drawn-back shoulders communicating fury more powerfully than an outburst. Her only spoken response is “Insolent,” but the duel has already converted the academy’s formal hierarchy into a battlefield in which rank, etiquette, and domestic service are expressed through military force. The White Gloves’ polished discipline remains visible in their weapons and coordination, while Vivisari’s enthusiasm repeatedly pushes the encounter beyond the scale of an acceptable defense.
Restoration and Recognition
When Vivisari finally looks around, the result of her exhilaration is unmistakable: the yard has been pulverized, trees have been toppled, and the grounds of Winston’s academy have become a ruined battlefield. Her home and the institution built upon it have been damaged by the person who most strongly claims them. The realization changes the emotional value of the encounter. What had been a thrilling test of talent becomes an incriminating homecoming, especially when Winston’s voice reaches her across the wreckage.
Vivisari first attempts to make amends through restorative magic. With Mass Greater Restoration, she sends a wave of green energy through the assembled maids and butlers, removing bruises, sealing cuts, and lifting the exhausted posture of the White Gloves. The healing does not resolve their suspicion. They continue to watch her cautiously, because recovery from an attack does not explain the attack itself, and Vivisari remains an unidentified figure who has assaulted the academy’s personnel and damaged its grounds.
She then employs a far more dangerous and extraordinary solution. By casting The Clockwork Unwinds, Vivisari seizes the mechanism that holds reality together and forces it to run backward. Soil and pulverized stone leap into the gouges they came from; damaged turf knits together; toppled trees wrench upright as their splintered trunks and scattered shards reassemble. The battle’s collateral damage plays in reverse until the manor grounds return to their former glory. Restoration here is not ordinary repair but a reversal of causality’s visible consequences, and its spectacle leaves even Vivisari speechless.
Welcome Home
The battle ends not with a defeat, surrender, or formal punishment, but with recognition. Winston stands apart from the White Gloves, smiling with the restrained composure expected of a butler, and bows to Vivisari. He welcomes her home as Mistress Vivisari and explains that he has managed the estate during her absence, asking whether she finds everything satisfactory. His response overturns Vivisari’s expectation that he should be angry: she has torn up the grounds and assaulted his pupils, yet he greets her without visible resentment after she restores the damage.
That welcome gives the event its decisive reversal. Vivisari returns expecting the emotional certainty of home but encounters an institution, a defensive hierarchy, and a new generation of White Gloves who do not know her. The battle temporarily turns the academy’s order into chaos, then Vivisari’s magic restores the physical setting without restoring the lost century or the relationships altered by it. Winston’s formal greeting bridges those two realities. The grounds are whole again, but the silence of the five White Gloves and Vivisari’s stunned lack of response show that the true disruption is personal and institutional: the owner has come home to a place that survived without her, and the academy must now decide what her return means.
