Design ring island track enchantment

New Life as a Max Level Archmage

The Orbital Enchantment Trial is a practical examination devised by Osmian for Vivisari Vexaria. Transported with Saffra to a concealed tropical arena, Vivisari must design an enchantment that makes a house-sized boulder orbit the island’s perimeter. The task matters because it removes the support of a premade spell: unlike her effortless use of Fly, Vivisari must construct a functioning magical solution from first principles, and her performance forces Osmian to reassess her as an enchanter.

Setting and Terms of the Trial

Osmian brings Vivisari Vexaria and Saffra to a lush tropical island beneath a blue sky. The island appears to be far from the Thaumaturgical Institute, although Vivisari suspects that the location is an enlarged arena reached through teleportation rather than an ordinary journey. Her magical senses find nothing remarkable about the boulder placed before her, despite its being as large as a small house. The environment therefore presents an apparently mundane physical problem inside a carefully prepared magical testing ground.

Osmian supplies the premise that an ongoing ritual will provide the energy source. Vivisari is not required to inscribe the enchantment immediately; she need only present the design. This restriction shifts the test away from manual craftsmanship and toward conceptual understanding. The demanded effect is precise: the boulder must orbit around the island’s perimeter, requiring Vivisari to reconcile gravity, motion, direction, and sustained magical power within one coherent structure.

From Familiar Spell to Original Design

The trial follows an earlier flight examination that Vivisari found trivial because Fly had been perfected during the years since Osmian’s death. That contrast establishes the real difficulty of the boulder problem. A finished spell can be invoked through established knowledge, whereas the orbital enchantment has no premade solution available to her. Vivisari must decide how to approach the problem and devise the underlying arrangement herself.

Her attention is absorbed by the puzzle. She regards it as more demanding than the incomplete design on Osmian’s Door, though still less overwhelming than the dimensional anomaly that had occupied her thoughts for days without yielding much progress. The comparison places the trial within a hierarchy of magical problems: it is not beyond Vivisari’s ability, but it is sufficiently open-ended to test invention rather than recall. Even after judging the task a temporary form of entertainment, she continues working through its structure because she enjoys magic in nearly all its forms.

Before presenting the result, Vivisari asks whether tools and materials are available. Osmian’s answer—that the design alone is sufficient—confirms that the trial concerns the architecture of the enchantment rather than its physical inscription. Vivisari then sketches the proposed solution in an illusion suspended in the air before herself, Osmian, and Saffra.

Osmian’s Reassessment

Osmian initially reacts with derision, warning Vivisari to consider her approach before rushing into a project. His confidence changes as the design develops. He begins to point out what he believes are flaws or omissions, but repeatedly stops when additional glowing symbols reveal that Vivisari has already accounted for the issue. His interruptions become a pattern of failed correction: each attempted assertion of superiority is displaced by the expanding logic of her construction.

The completed design is written in the runic language of High Arcana. Osmian studies it in silence for a long minute before admitting that some clusters are oblique in purpose but that the core design is sensible and contains no major flaws. He acknowledges that it is not the method he would have chosen, yet he can no longer dismiss it. His next question concerns Vivisari’s rank in enchanting, indicating that the quality of the design has made her formal standing newly relevant to his judgment.

Vivisari’s response treats the question as secondary. The important result is not a title but the demonstrated ability to produce a viable magical design. Osmian remains difficult to read and continues to appraise her seriously, but the trial has already altered the balance between examiner and examinee: his skepticism has become cautious evaluation.

The Trial’s Second Demand

Osmian does not allow the successful design to settle the examination. He announces that the enchantment will be used in the third and final trial, adding a further constraint: Vivisari may not use her own mana to fuel it. The necessary energy must instead be drawn from the island’s flora. This transforms the orbital design from a static intellectual exercise into a test of ritualism and environmental channeling.

The condition also exposes the difference between designing a spell and sustaining one through an external system. Vivisari immediately recognizes the nature of the challenge. Her enchantment must not merely describe how the boulder could move; it must operate through a ritual arrangement that takes power from living material around the island. Osmian therefore evaluates both her capacity to invent an enchantment and her ability to connect that invention to a larger magical process.

Significance of the Demonstration

The trial presents Vivisari’s power in a more exact form than a display of destructive force. Elsewhere, her overwhelming strength enables her to tear a Cataclysm apart with casual ease, encouraging witnesses to mistake her for a descending god rather than the legendary Sorceress. The island examination supplies a contrasting image: instead of overwhelming an enemy, she builds an intricate solution, responds to a novel constraint, and makes an expert examiner abandon one objection after another.

That contrast gives the event its decisive significance. Vivisari’s superiority is not limited to accumulated spell power or perfected techniques. She can also reason through an unfamiliar magical system and express the solution in High Arcana. Yet the trial does not end with simple approval. Osmian’s demand for ritual power preserves a further threshold, ensuring that the successful design is only the foundation for the final examination. The Orbital Enchantment Trial thus marks both a demonstrated achievement and the opening of a more difficult test of whether Vivisari’s invention can function within the living environment that must sustain it.
