Earthly Shackles Unbound Trial

New Life as a Max Level Archmage

Osmian’s spellcasting trial tests Vivi by asking her to complete an unfinished design and use it to cross a mountain range. The task becomes an encounter between an ancient mage’s conception of a grand magical achievement and the ordinary modern name for that same spell: [Fly]. Vivi’s successful flight earns Osmian’s approval, but the exchange also reveals how thoroughly a once-difficult working has entered everyday magical practice.

The Trial’s Design

Osmian presents the challenge at the edge of a mountain within his trial environment. He describes the illusory spell circle as an unfinished design of his own creation and sets a clear condition: Vivi must complete it, then use it to cross the range to a distant mountaintop. The objective is both technical and practical. Merely recognizing the design is not enough; the test requires her to form the spell and control its effect over a journey.

The setting itself is part of the demonstration. Vivi senses magic as Osmian approaches the mountain’s edge and appears to begin casting, but cannot tell where the mana comes from. She doubts that it is supplied by Osmian’s ghost and instead considers whether the construct can activate mechanisms prepared in advance. In her reading, the trial chamber is an elaborate arrangement of enchantments and rituals, disciplines more closely associated with Osmian than direct spellcasting. That distinction frames the test: its apparent simplicity rests on a sophisticated magical environment.

A Name from Another Age

Vivi studies the unfinished design, but Saffra identifies it first as [Fly]. Osmian initially reacts with irritation at Saffra’s interruption; once he understands what she has said, irritation gives way to confusion. He insists that the design is [Earthly Shackles Unbound], not [Fly], and is horrified at the possibility that his working was perfected while he was absent and given such an unassuming name.

The disagreement exposes the gulf between Osmian’s era and Vivi’s. For him, the spell is a remarkable creation whose name should preserve its grandeur. For Vivi, its familiarity has obscured its complexity: she uses [Fly] often, yet recognizes that maintaining intuitive control of one’s body in defiance of gravity is no simple feat. Though the spell is only tier ten, its architecture is difficult enough that even most Titled Rank mages cannot properly form and incant it. Vivi is herself impressed by what the spell accomplishes at that tier.

Osmian’s reaction gives the naming dispute its force. He understands that millennia may bring advances so extensive that even his grand workings become commonplace, but he cannot accept that this one has been reduced to [Fly]. Vivi, unsure how to respond, asks whether the revelation changes the trial. It does not. Osmian retains the practical requirement—form and control the spell—and makes clear that spellcasting is the least significant of his trials. He has already seen enough to judge her competence, and his legacy, as he explains, was not that of a combat mage.

Vivi’s Demonstration

Vivi turns from the historical dispute to the task itself. Bright white runes appear in the air as she forms [Fly]. The spell is not simply a copy of a fixed contemporary pattern: she suspects that her version is not standard, because she has made personal modifications to it. Osmian watches with rising eyebrows as gravity releases its hold on her. She floats upward and moves from side to side, demonstrating the fluidity and ease of her control.

Osmian recognizes that the exercise is almost perfunctory for her, but still requires her to complete it as prescribed. Vivi therefore puts the spell on Saffra and flies with her toward the distant mountaintop. The trial measures more than Vivi’s ability to lift herself: she can extend the working to another person and carry them through the course. Her demonstration supplies the practical evidence Osmian asked for, while her customized spell shows that she can work beyond the particular design he presented.

Passage and Consequence

The apparent mountain range is part of a staged environment. As Vivi and Saffra travel, the room follows them and its illusion shifts so seamlessly that the surroundings continue to seem like open wilderness. Vivi recognizes that even the chamber’s parlor tricks reflect formidable skill. The test therefore makes its artificial construction nearly disappear: the environment supports the journey without interrupting the impression of crossing real terrain.

When Vivi sets down, Osmian nods and declares that her spellcasting abilities more than meet his standards. The flying exercise has fulfilled its purpose, but it is only one component of a larger succession of challenges. Osmian next turns to enchanting, says that he must teleport them, and allows Saffra to accompany Vivi as her apprentice. He snaps his fingers; after the environment flickers and magic takes hold of both women, they arrive on a lush tropical island before a boulder the size of a small house. The trial’s successful spellcasting stage thus ends not with a final reward, but with a transition into the next discipline.

Significance

The episode measures mastery across time as well as skill. Osmian’s design remains impressive, but what he regards as an enduring grand working has become a familiar tool for Vivi. The contrast does not make his achievement trivial: Vivi’s reflection on the spell’s difficulty, together with the trial chamber’s seamless illusions, confirms the ingenuity behind Osmian’s work. Instead, the scene distinguishes between a magic’s historical reputation and its later everyday use.

Vivi’s success also clarifies the limits of what has been established. Osmian considers her spellcasting sufficient and explicitly ranks it as the least significant part of his trials; Vivi, meanwhile, suspects that later tests may emphasize enchanting or ritualism, areas in which she has different levels of experience. Passing this stage confirms a specific competence, not completion of the entire trial. Its decisive result is that Vivi and Saffra leave the mountain course together, with Osmian ready to examine Vivi’s skill in another branch of magic.
