Icevein Craters

New Life as a Max Level Archmage

Icevein Craters is a difficult-to-reach hunting ground beyond the Granite Spines in the continent’s northernmost reaches. Classified as a mithril-rank zone, it is valuable for the Star-Ice embedded in its meteors and dangerous because those meteors generate powerful crystalline monsters. Vivisari Vexaria brings Saffra there not to harvest high-rank crafting materials for herself, but to give her a controlled opportunity to practice Scorchlance, test newly supplied equipment, and confront an enemy far beyond the scale normally available to a silver-rank adventurer.

Location and Environment

Several Blinks, reinforced by flight and speed spells, carry Vivisari Vexaria and Saffra north over the snowy caps of the Granite Spines. The landscape changes rapidly beneath them: green gives way to white, and brisk air becomes biting cold as they reach the sprawling tundra. Vivisari Vexaria’s memory proves accurate, and she sets down on a cliff overlooking the craters, where the terrain appears almost untouched by the passage of a hundred years.

The zone is marked by impact sites scattered across icy plains. The smallest craters measure about ten meters across, while the largest approach a thousand meters in width. At the center of each lies a dense gray meteor threaded with spiderweb patterns of blue metal. These celestial bodies are rich in Star-Ice, the resource that draws adventurers into such a remote and hazardous region. The craters therefore function simultaneously as geological scars, resource deposits, and monster habitats.

Monsters and Adventuring Stakes

Living crystalline growths sprout from the meteors, forming Star-Ice Sentinels. Giant crystal blades rotate lazily around them in orbit, remaining dormant unless an intruder approaches the meteor they guard. The most formidable example is the Star-Core Bloom, a zone boss growing from the widest and deepest impact crater. It stands roughly two miles from Vivisari Vexaria’s overlook, its immense crystalline body accompanied by ice blades as large as buildings. It has grown substantially since Vivisari Vexaria last remembered the region and has reached level 1100.

The Star-Core Bloom is classified as Titled, but its threat is conditional rather than immediately aggressive: it will awaken only if someone enters its crater. The other Sentinels follow the same pattern, allowing experienced travelers to observe the zone’s greatest dangers without automatically provoking them. Vivisari Vexaria identifies the growth of the Star-Core Bloom as a practical concern, since a monster left alone may continue becoming larger, while the Star-Ice within its meteor is likely worth harvesting if the opportunity can be taken safely.

Around the craters’ flat expanses move weaker natural constructs created by the ice mana radiated from the meteors. Vivisari Vexaria specifically points out Rime Crawlers, Icevein Shardlings, and Glacial Geists as Saffra’s intended opponents. Unlike the distant Star-Core Bloom, these monsters provide manageable targets for combat practice. The lowest-level creature Vivisari Vexaria can find is a level 512 Rime Crawler, a crystalline, leopard-like monster made of white-blue ice.

Saffra’s Training Expedition

Saffra recognizes the name of Icevein Craters after recalling her time in Prismarche and immediately understands its significance. She is close to gold by level, but lacks a team, making the prospect of entering a mithril-rank zone alarming even though the stated purpose is merely practice with Scorchlance. Vivisari Vexaria treats the disparity as acceptable, reasoning that fighting half a rank above Saffra’s usual range will be manageable and will produce better experience.

The expedition also serves as an equipment trial. Before placing Saffra within casting range of a Rime Crawler, Vivisari Vexaria gives her newly made gear and creates a temporary stone enclosure so that she can equip it privately. The armor is crafted personally because market-quality equipment would not have been acceptable; Vivisari Vexaria describes its production as requiring less than a full afternoon. Even this custom armor, however, is minor beside the more extraordinary protection she intends to provide.

That protection is a brilliant gold-and-orange feather shedding motes of fire. Its heat is powerful enough to melt the snow across a radius of fifty feet, forcing Vivisari Vexaria to suppress the effect herself before handing it over. The expedition thus combines mentorship, preparation, and controlled danger: Saffra is not simply thrown into an unfamiliar battlefield, but equipped, shielded, and given repeated chances to attempt the spell. When Saffra admits that her previous success with Scorchlance may not be repeatable, Vivisari Vexaria tells her to keep trying without pressure.

The Star-Core Bloom Confrontation

The apparent training exercise escalates when Vivisari Vexaria suggests that Saffra fight the Titled Star-Core Bloom itself. The proposal overwhelms Saffra because a silver-rank adventurer is not expected to kill a Titled monster. Vivisari Vexaria nevertheless presents the fight as a viable opportunity: the creature may be better eliminated before it grows larger, and the Star-Ice in its meteor may justify the risk. She also promises to remain close enough to repair anything that goes wrong.

Saffra eventually accepts. Vivisari Vexaria warns her not to consume an entire page of the codex if she does not need to, then Blinks them to the edge of the Star-Core Bloom’s enormous crater. At close range, the creature’s crystalline growths and building-sized orbiting blades become far more intimidating than they appeared from the overlook. The contrast also exposes the unreliability of visual scale: the Ghul-Feather had technically been stronger by a hundred levels, yet had seemed less threatening because it was many times smaller.

Saffra’s final obstacle is not only the monster but the mana required to oppose it. Holding the heavy tome against her arm, she aims her staff and links herself to the codex’s first page, entering an ocean of power that makes her feel cosmically insignificant. She tolerates the second encounter better than the first, managing not to scream or drop the book, though she still needs several deep breaths before she can act. Icevein Craters therefore becomes the setting where ordinary adventuring categories—silver rank, Titled rank, training exercise, and lethal confrontation—are deliberately stretched by Vivisari Vexaria’s mentorship.

Narrative Significance

Icevein Craters embodies the gap between formal rank and actual potential. Saffra approaches it as an adventurer who lacks a team and doubts whether she can reproduce a single successful spell; within the same frozen landscape, she is offered equipment made by an archmage, protection capable of altering the surrounding weather, access to extraordinary mana, and a chance to challenge a level 1100 Titled monster. The zone’s hierarchy is therefore both concrete and unstable: its creatures have assigned levels and ranks, yet Vivisari Vexaria’s intervention makes those classifications negotiable.

The location also gives physical form to a recurring contrast between wonder and terror. Its untouched tundra, blue-veined meteors, crystalline organisms, and orbiting blades create a spectacular landscape that Saffra can only admire from a distance. The same beauty conceals creatures born from radiating ice mana and a dormant boss capable of awakening if the wrong boundary is crossed. For Saffra, the craters are at once a destination she had heard about, a source of rare material, a classroom, and a test of whether her expanding power can survive contact with the world’s highest dangers.
