Patience
New Life as a Max Level ArchmagePatience is Constance’s enormous battle axe and the clearest material emblem of the White Glove deputy headmistress’s contradictory character. Its name promises restraint, but Constance wields it with immediate and escalating force: the weapon protects the Academy for the Domestic Arts and Establishment of Excellent Service while also exposing how quickly its guardian turns defensive duty into furious combat.
Identity and Appearance
Patience is a massive axe with a silver blade, large enough for its movements to dominate the Academy’s forecourt. When Constance points it toward Vivisari Vexaria, the gesture formally transforms an uncertain encounter into a duel. The weapon’s scale and enchanted construction make every swing consequential: a missed blow does not merely pass harmlessly through empty space but carves into the paved path, the yard, and the surrounding grounds.
Nicole, who is accustomed to the rigid decorum of the White Gloves, finds the name almost absurdly revealing. Constance is not known for the virtue her weapon invokes. The contrast becomes a running visual joke and a character judgment at once: Patience is attached to someone who possesses very little of it.
Use in the Academy Duel
When Vivisari Vexaria appears as an uninvited presence at the Academy, Constance chooses Patience as the instrument of eviction. The first attack is almost too fast for Nicole to perceive. Constance appears in front of the demon woman, and the axe’s silver edge hangs in the sunlight before descending like an executioner’s blade. Vivisari turns aside at the last instant; the miss removes a huge section of the paved path and continues forward through the property.
Constance follows without allowing the exchange to settle. She twists and cuts toward Vivisari’s new position, but Vivisari ducks beneath the second strike and retreats two calm steps while Constance resets her stance. The contrast between them is immediately established through the weapon: Patience embodies explosive, close-range pressure, while Vivisari’s composure makes even the axe’s destructive reach look manageable.
The weapon’s role changes when Constance becomes angry. After Vivisari’s evasions, Constance tightens her grip and abandons whatever restraint she had shown. Her later attacks arrive as flashes of silver across the forecourt, with great cleaves tearing through the manicured grounds and the displaced force of missed strikes damaging trees and branches. The axe’s violence is therefore measured not only by contact with its target but by the landscape it disturbs. Even fruit trees that Nicole loves are shaken and broken by the impacts surrounding the duel.
Patience remains effective against Vivisari’s magic, but not decisive. Constance performs a low sweep for Vivisari’s legs followed immediately by a diagonal cut toward her torso. Vivisari avoids the first attack and deflects the second with her staff, the collision sending a shockwave through the grounds and snapping trees nearby. Later, Constance activates a skill that makes the glowing axe cut through a barrage of white-purple magical spheres. The weapon splits the projectiles, but the severed pieces still explode around her, showing that Patience can interrupt hostile magic without eliminating its danger.
Damage, Strain, and Reversal
The duel ultimately reveals the limits of Patience as an answer to an unknown opponent. Vivisari’s black fire does not simply burn the ground; it erases physical matter, leaving areas of the Academy’s surroundings vanished. Constance continues to advance, but a spell from Vivisari’s staff launches her through a tree. A subsequent explosion of white-and-violet lightning throws her across the yard, cuts a long streak through the soil, and drives the axe into stone.
Constance pulls Patience free and returns to the fight after only a moment of visible weakness. Smoke pours from her, and even the Academy’s exceptionally durable uniform is torn by the impact, yet she stabilizes and disappears forward again. The axe thus functions as the fixed center of her refusal to yield: despite the damage to its wielder and the grounds around her, it remains in her grip and marks her immediate return to combat.
The reversal comes when Vivisari ends the exchange without treating Constance as a defeated enemy. Vivisari thanks her for the spar and acknowledges that Winston trained her well. Constance then dispels Patience, causing the enormous battle axe to melt into silver smoke. The disappearance of the weapon is the physical sign that the threat has ended and that Constance’s defensive posture can finally be withdrawn.
Character and Narrative Significance
Patience gives the Academy’s defense a tangible contradiction. It is a named object associated with restraint, yet its first major appearance produces speed, craters, shattered trees, erased ground, and repeated attempts to drive an invader away. The irony does not make the axe ineffectual; rather, it sharpens the distinction between the ideal represented by the name and the impatience of the person using it.
At the same time, Patience is not presented as an autonomous will. Its force depends on Constance’s judgment, anger, skills, and willingness to keep attacking. The weapon magnifies her protective instinct and her rashness in equal measure. Constance believes she is defending her home, while Vivisari is secretly treating the encounter as an opportunity to test Winston’s pupil. Once that misunderstanding is exposed, the axe’s violence is reclassified: it was not a villainous assault, but neither was Vivisari’s provocation sensible. Patience therefore closes the scene as both a formidable weapon and an ironic reminder that righteous protection can become reckless before anyone has fully understood the situation.
