Saffra Evades Isabella in the Library

New Life as a Max Level Archmage

Saffra Evades Isabella in the Library is a brief encounter in the Thaumaturgical Institute’s restricted archives that turns an ordinary research outing into a confrontation with Saffra’s unresolved past. When Isabella Caldimore appears, Saffra hides behind Vivi and vanishes under an invisibility spell. Isabella leaves without finding her, but the encounter makes clear that Saffra’s fear is not simply embarrassment at being recognized: it is bound to a former friendship and a betrayal whose circumstances remain uncertain.

Setting and Immediate Context

Vivi and Saffra are exploring the first level of the restricted archives. Vivi’s credentials, together with her naming Saffra as her apprentice, allow them to enter without the librarian objecting. This floor is not the Institute’s most exclusive store of knowledge: its shelves are fewer and more modest than the great, arena-like main library, and the best volumes are kept elsewhere. Even so, Vivi finds the spell designs crude by her standards. She is unsure whether the instructional manuals are worth giving Saffra, though she judges that their information, while primitive, is not harmful.

The outing is therefore both an apprenticeship activity and a moment of relative ease. Saffra is more engaged by the shelves than Vivi, who is examining a journal about an inferior version of the seventh-tier spell Earthrend. That quiet exploration ends when Saffra rushes around a corner with a panicked expression and urgently asks Vivi to hide her. The abrupt change in the scene makes the library’s shelves less a setting for study than cover from a person Saffra cannot bear to face.

The Evasion

Vivi does not hesitate. She draws and shapes mana, then silently casts Invisibility, concealing Saffra as she takes cover behind her. The speed of the response matters: Vivi acts before demanding an explanation, treating Saffra’s fear as sufficient reason to protect her in the moment. Saffra’s grip tightens on Vivi’s robes, and her forehead presses against Vivi’s back. She is trembling, a physical reaction that recalls the state she was in after her encounter with the Morningstar agents. That comparison puts Vivi on alert before she knows who has appeared.

The newcomer is a tall, thin teenage student with straight blonde hair, blue eyes, and a uniform. She looks gaunt and distressed, searching the hallway with a frantic gaze. After failing to find the person she was pursuing, she turns that searching look on Vivi and demands to know where the girl has gone. Vivi answers evenly, asking who the student means. The exchange leaves the hidden Saffra and the visibly agitated Isabella on opposite sides of an encounter that neither can bring into the open: one is concealed, the other convinced she has seen someone.

Isabella insists that she is not imagining what she saw, but her certainty falters as she tries to explain why the person cannot be there. She asks who Vivi is and where the girl went, then raises a hand to her head and slumps as her attempt to regain control breaks down. Vivi nearly steps toward her out of concern. Instead, Isabella apologizes for bothering them and flees. The scene offers no reconciliation and no explanation; its immediate action is concealment, a failed search, and retreat.

Recognition and Aftermath

Once Isabella has gone, Vivi dispels the spell. Saffra stays crouched behind her for several long moments, still clutching her robes. Vivi attempts to ease the tension by suggesting that a more thorough disguise might have been wiser, but Saffra does not respond to the joke. After a long silence, she says that Isabella was the only person who would recognize her. The comment confirms Vivi’s suspicion that the blonde student was Isabella Caldimore, Duke Caldimore’s daughter, and that Saffra’s panic arose from more than the risk of being caught by an old classmate.

In the reading alcove where they sit afterward, Saffra looks miserable and seems absorbed in her thoughts. Vivi asks whether they merely crossed paths or whether something else happened. Saffra says that Isabella saw her and she ran away. She begins to say that Isabella was the one who got her, then stops herself, squares her jaw, and insists that it does not matter and that Isabella should be forgotten. The firmness of the declaration is undercut by her lack of conviction and by her drooping cat tail. She walks away before Vivi can decide how to press her for an explanation, leaving Vivi to follow without a clear account of what happened between the two girls.

A Rupture Left Unexplained

The encounter changes Vivi’s understanding without resolving the history behind it. She had already suspected that Saffra’s relationship with Isabella was painful; Saffra’s fear, her fragmentary accusation, and her attempt to shut down the subject make that suspicion harder to dismiss. Yet Isabella’s visible panic and concern complicate the picture. Vivi reasons that this is not how a simple two-faced bully would react to the return of her target, and begins to suspect that there may be two victims in the conflict. This is Vivi’s reading of the evidence, not a settled account of the past.

Saffra remains distracted for the rest of the library visit, despite trying to wear an unbothered expression. Vivi ends the outing early rather than insist on continuing the exploration. Later, when Saffra and Isabella speak again, Isabella asks where Saffra has been during the past eight months and says that she had wanted to help, perhaps by sending money, but feared her father would discover it. That later exchange adds context to the library encounter without erasing its fear or explaining the betrayal outright. The scene’s significance lies in this tension: Saffra’s instinct is to flee, Isabella’s appearance is marked by distress, and Vivi is left to protect her apprentice while recognizing that the story between the former friends cannot be reduced to a simple accusation.
