Saffra's Defensive Enchantment State

New Life as a Max Level Archmage

Saffra's Defensive Enchantment State is the protective condition created when Vivisari Vexaria surrounds Saffra with her most powerful defensive magic. Its decisive importance is practical rather than merely symbolic: while the enchantments remain active, Saffra can endure threats vastly beyond her own strength, turning a vulnerable apprentice into the only viable person able to cross the Emberblade Fields and draw the Ghul-Feather away from the convoy.

Creation and Purpose

Before leaving the convoy to establish a Warp Anchor near the tracks, Vivisari Vexaria noticed the disgruntled noblemen nearby and judged that Saffra might need protection while she was absent. She therefore cast defensive spells on Saffra as a precaution, but the precaution was deliberately excessive. Vivisari used her highest-tier defensive spells and applied the full array, to the point that even the Ashen Hierophant would have struggled to break through them. She also instructed Saffra to warn anyone who attempted something that Vivisari would return shortly and be displeased.

The enchantment was consequently both a shield and a logistical solution. Vivisari did not make Saffra stronger, faster, or more capable of physically confronting a monster. Instead, she supplied the defense necessary for Saffra to perform a task that ordinary adventurers could not safely attempt. The distinction remained crucial: Saffra could survive attacks, but she still had to run through the grass, reach the engine car, and use judgment when the Ghul-Feather changed tactics.

Testing the Barriers

The protective state was tested because the adventurers needed to know whether it could withstand more than ordinary physical attacks. Jasper Trevane, an orichalcum-rank ranger, recognized that the shields Vivisari had placed on Saffra appeared to fill an entire book of spells. Since the Ghul-Feather was assessed at level twelve hundred, Jasper was the only person present who could approach the required testing strength. His stated aim was to determine whether the barriers triggered against every attack type, including uncommon magic, rather than merely stopping arrows or conventional spells.

Jasper began by aiming at Saffra's palm. The first arrow produced a spark in her magical senses and sent a prismatic ripple across her hand, but caused no pressure, pain, or even the sensation of being touched. He then launched a stronger attack with his passive skills active. The second arrow shattered harmlessly against the barrier, while Saffra remained completely unharmed. Jasper's final demonstrated shot was powerful enough to transform the arrow into a miniature fireball through sheer firing force, yet the protective state continued to hold.

The group expanded the examination to magic and other forms of attack, although the approaching danger left little time for an exhaustive catalogue of every possible manifestation. After ten minutes, the adventurers concluded that Saffra was functionally invulnerable by every test available to those present. None of the mages, including Saffra herself, detected fluctuation or strain in the defenses. The image used to describe the result was that of a polished tower shield that had not acquired a dent, scratch, or scuff. The conclusion was not that Saffra had become permanently immortal, but that she was almost impossible to harm until Vivisari's spells expired, possibly even against Titled-rank threats.

Performance in the Emberblade Fields

The enchantments faced their true trial when the Ghul-Feather attacked. Its caw should have been lethal, but the defenses had already been tested against sonic attacks and protected Saffra from the sound. The creature then struck with a flap of its wings, sending concussive air across the ground and erasing a section of terrain in a twenty-meter arc down to the stone. For the first time, the frequently activated prismatic barrier flared visibly, scattering red, blue, and green light as it absorbed the level-twelve-hundred attack. Saffra's legs became unsteady, but she remained alive.

The monster next attacked from the air. It launched enormous feathers, each as long as a spear, which embedded themselves in the ground around Saffra. The prismatic shield continued to protect her, allowing her to keep sprinting through the tall grass. The defense did not remove the danger from the scene; Saffra could still see the scale and likely force of the attack, and she still had to move quickly, but it prevented the danger from becoming injury.

The state also demonstrated that its protection was not limited to attacks that produced visible rainbow sparks. As Saffra reached the middle of the Emberblade Fields, the sunshine-colored grass withered, whitened, grayed, and disintegrated into ash under necromantic energy so dense that anything below level one thousand would have died. No prismatic flash appeared, suggesting that another spell in Vivisari's defensive array answered the threat. Saffra crossed the lethal zone without hindrance, protected even when the specific operation of the barrier was invisible.

Finally, the Ghul-Feather abandoned its distant attacks and swooped down on Saffra. Its gigantic talons closed around her, but slipped uselessly across a prismatic barrier. Saffra responded by raising her wand and bluffing the creature into retreat. The monster, unable to sense danger from her despite its failed attacks, flew away in haste. Saffra then reached the front of the engine car and repeatedly struck the heavy steel door, completing the immediate purpose for which the enchantment had been prepared.

Limits and Narrative Significance

Saffra's Defensive Enchantment State is powerful precisely because its scope is broad while its duration remains conditional. The defenses can answer physical force, magic, sound, necromantic saturation, and the Ghul-Feather's direct grasp, but Saffra is not thereby granted offensive strength or the ability to move the monster aside. The account explicitly preserves that limitation: she is as well defended as the High King's vault, not physically stronger than the creature. Her survival depends on the spells holding and on her continuing to run, improvise, and use the wand as a bluff.

The state also gives visible form to the difference between personal power and borrowed protection. Jasper's testing establishes its credibility through escalating attacks, while the Ghul-Feather scene confirms that the testing was not empty display. The barrier's first brilliant flare under a level-twelve-hundred wing strike, its silent response to the necromantic field, and its resistance to the monster's talons turn Vivisari's paranoia into a concrete survival mechanism. What begins as a precaution against hostile noblemen becomes the decisive condition that lets Saffra pass through a landscape where ordinary adventurers would have died.

For Saffra, the enchantment produces a strange temporary status: she is frightened, physically vulnerable in the ordinary sense, and unable to overpower the Ghul-Feather, yet functionally untouchable. That contrast drives the scene's tension. The state does not abolish fear; it lets fear coexist with reliable protection, so that Saffra can flinch at the arrow, feel terror when the talons descend, and still continue toward the convoy. Its ending condition is equally important. The state lasts only until Vivisari's spells run out, making the apparent invulnerability powerful but finite rather than a permanent alteration of Saffra's abilities.
