The Defense of Meridian

New Life as a Max Level Archmage

The Defense of Meridian is the decisive defensive battle against the horde pouring from a dimensional anomaly into Meridian, the capital city of the human kingdoms. Its significance lies in the contrast between collective resistance and singular power: heroes of every level rush to protect the city, but Vivi is the only combatant capable of destroying Greater Voidbeasts with a spoken word. Her intervention prevents the invasion from overrunning Meridian, while her final movement toward the anomaly shifts the objective from surviving the attack to eliminating its source.

Causes and Background

Meridian’s position as the human kingdoms’ capital makes its defense unusually consequential. It contains more Titled figures than any other city, yet the relative calm that followed the Cataclysms has not made society complacent. People continue to fear monsters capable of destroying cities and the possibility of another world-rending Cataclysm. When the dimensional hole begins releasing voidlings and Voidbeasts in dense waves, the city’s accumulated strength is forced into immediate action.

The invasion also exposes the limitations of that strength. The material composing the invading creatures is extraordinarily resistant: it frustrates mages in particular, while its physical properties allow the monsters to ignore skills and stats as readily as spells. Even the Archbishop’s divinity-infused magic can only burn deeply into a Voidbeast’s armor rather than kill it outright. A Voidbeast rated at 1430 can be injured by a Titled combatant, but Greater Voidbeasts remain beyond the reach of everyone Vivi has observed except herself.

Participants and Defensive Struggle

The defense gathers powerful figures from across Meridian. Heroes of all levels swarm toward the threatened city, responding with the reflexive energy of a disturbed anthill. Among the recognizable combatants is a woman who fights with thirteen differently colored swords hovering behind her and striking with enough speed to sever the limbs of Lesser Voidbeasts. The Archbishop contributes golden fire, while the Institute’s archmages and grand magi enter the battle as well. Vivi is one participant among many, but the scale of her ability makes her role fundamentally different from theirs.

The human defenders can reach the Lesser Voidbeasts, yet they struggle against the more powerful forms. Vivi’s own battle becomes a contest of endurance and adaptation. The creatures emerge shoulder to shoulder from the dimensional hole, and their flow is interrupted only when another Greater Voidbeast appears, its size closely matching its strength. Vivi has already destroyed four of the greatest threats, each one becoming easier as she adapts her spells, but killing magic-resistant Cataclysms steadily consumes her mana. Potions might extend her effort, not make it indefinite. The battle therefore cannot be won by simply continuing to fight the creatures one by one; the breach itself must be addressed.

Vivi’s Intervention

Vivi begins the decisive phase by putting everything available to her into magic for the first time since arriving in this world. She casts Balefire Eruption, Crushing Singularity, Everfrost, and Oblivion’s Toll in succession. The effect is immediate and immense: Titled-rank threats die by the dozens, while mithril-rank and higher creatures fall by the thousands. Wherever her staff points, the ground is scoured clean of the extra-dimensional scourge.

The destructive force does not make the task simple. Vivi considers killing easy compared with killing selectively. The defenders and civilians beneath her are fragile beside the targets, and a moment’s loss of concentration could kill a mortal, even a Titled combatant, as casually as an unnoticed branch breaking underfoot. She fears that her caution may still have failed and that she may have caused collateral deaths. The defense thus gives her power a moral and practical boundary: victory requires not merely annihilating the enemy, but controlling annihilation in a populated city.

Her spell barrage clears much of the invading force and buys the defenders a brief reprieve. Attention from throughout Meridian turns toward the empty air from which the spells originated. Vivi’s reinforced invisibility prevents most observers from seeing her, but the scale of the attack makes concealment increasingly implausible. The city may soon identify its unseen savior as the Sorceress rather than as the wandering immortal she has used as a cover.

Consequences and Aftermath

The immediate consequence is the preservation of Meridian. Without Vivi, the city would certainly have been overrun; with her assistance, the invasion’s main force is substantially reduced and the city’s other defenders gain time to continue resisting. Yet the battle is not presented as complete merely because thousands of monsters have been destroyed. The dimensional hole continues to function as the source of the horde, and Vivi recognizes that every further wave will renew the same unsustainable expenditure of mana.

Having created that opening, Vivi Blinks above the dimensional anomaly and begins examining or manipulating it directly. This movement changes the structure of the defense from a battle across the city to an assault on the gateway sustaining the invasion. The defenders’ survival depends on whether the source can be solved, not on how long Vivi can maintain her exceptional rate of destruction.

The episode also establishes a recurring tension in Vivi’s power. She can perform violence on a scale no other participant can match, but the presence of vulnerable people turns every spell into a problem of precision. Meridian is saved through overwhelming force, yet that force remains dangerous to the society it protects. The defense therefore joins a collective civic response to an individual act of near-apocalyptic magic, leaving the city alive but Vivi’s secrecy and reserves both under severe pressure.
