Vanguard Guild Tier Zero

New Life as a Max Level Archmage

Vanguard Guild Tier Zero is the diminished but recoverable condition of the ancient Vanguard after nearly a century of dormancy. The guild that once shepherded the world through seven earth-rending Cataclysms has returned, yet its return is not a restoration of former power. The organization remains present in structure and identity while functioning as a restricted, nearly emptied institution whose first task is to rebuild membership and recover access to what was lost.

Definition and Historical Condition

The state is introduced through the mythic quest titled The Restoration of Vanguard, Stage One. Its framing treats Vanguard as a noble organization whose treasures disappeared during its long dormancy and whose legacy cannot simply be reclaimed intact. The guild has survived, but survival is presented as only the material basis for renewal: what has been broken must be forged anew, and the lingering nightmares of the past do not eliminate the continuing need for Vanguard.

This condition is therefore neither total destruction nor ordinary decline. The guild’s physical structure appears to remain, while its institutional continuity has been severed. The contrast between the endurance of the headquarters and the disappearance of its records, members, and privileges gives Vanguard Guild Tier Zero its defining character: it is an intact shell awaiting the deliberate reconstitution of the organization that once occupied it.

Reset of Rank and Membership

The System-granted quest identifies the immediate institutional penalty with unusual precision: Vanguard’s guild tier has progressed backward to zero. The reset is not merely an administrative label. It determines which facilities are available, what resources can be reached, and how much of the guild’s former capacity can be used.

Rafael remains the steward, and Vivi remains the registered guildmaster, so the two central offices have survived the reset. Everyone else, however, has been removed from the official record. The craftsmen who once formed the practical foundation of Vanguard are not listed, and Rafael’s own records have vanished. The guild has consequently been pushed almost back to its beginning, although Rafael concludes that it has been restricted rather than completely remade: the underlying structure remains unchanged, and the missing functions can be reopened through reconstruction.

The first restoration requirement is to locate a prior Vanguard craftsman and induct that person into the ranks again. The task is rated mythic even though Vivi initially considers it to be only the recovery of one member. Its significance lies in what that single induction represents. Reinstating a craftsman is the condition for moving the guild from tier zero to tier one, making one individual the institutional key to reopening an entire layer of Vanguard’s former operation.

Locked Resources and the Guild Vault

The reset is made concrete by the loss of access to the Craftsmen Quarters. They are not destroyed; they are locked behind the guild’s present condition and will open when one former member is brought back. This makes the quarters a visible measure of Vanguard’s incomplete restoration. Their continued existence offers proof that the guild’s past has not been erased beyond recovery, while their inaccessibility prevents Vivi and Rafael from treating the surviving headquarters as fully functional.

The guild vault creates a darker uncertainty. Vivi finds that her personal storage remains intact and wonders whether the same luck applies to Vanguard’s collective treasury. When she goes to the cellar, the thick metal door is still in place, but the handle will not turn. The vault has not simply vanished; instead, it remains physically present and institutionally inaccessible. That distinction sustains both hope and threat, since the contents may still exist while being unavailable to the guild that owns them.

The quest’s reward reinforces the scale of the potential recovery. Advancing Vanguard from tier zero to tier one restores access to the Craftsmen Quarters and allows one item harvested from the Umbral Regent to be reforged into a level-2000 relic without a level requirement. Rafael regards this as significant, and Vivi recognizes that such a relic could outweigh the temporary loss of immediate access to the vault. The reward also establishes that the reset, despite its severity, may conceal an opportunity to transform a remnant of the Cataclysm era into an unprecedented resource.

Restoration Through Restriction

Vanguard Guild Tier Zero changes the meaning of restoration from a triumphant return into a controlled rebuilding process. The System does not return the guild’s former rank, membership, records, or resources automatically. Instead, it imposes a sequence: recover a craftsman, regain the first institutional tier, reopen the quarters, and only then continue toward the deeper remnants of Vanguard’s inheritance.

Rafael’s interpretation is cautiously optimistic. He acknowledges that nothing about the situation is normal and that Vanguard itself has never been normal, but he also sees the restriction as a boon. The guild’s reset exposes the gap between its legendary history and its present capacity, yet it preserves enough structure for that history to become actionable. The organization is not allowed to rest on reputation; it must prove its return through membership, labor, and restored function.

The state thus carries a double consequence. In practical terms, it delays access to the guild’s storage and deprives Vanguard of its craftsmen and records. In narrative terms, it converts the guild into a reconstruction project whose lost past becomes a source of suspense. Every surviving door, empty file, and locked facility points toward an institution that has been reduced without being erased, leaving its future dependent on whether Vivi and Rafael can turn the first recovered member into the beginning of a new Vanguard.
