Vivi and Rafael's Longstanding Alliance and Stewardship

New Life as a Max Level Archmage

Vivi and Rafael's Longstanding Alliance and Stewardship is both an enduring personal bond and a working political partnership. When Vivi / Vivisari Vexaria returns to a world that has moved on without her, Rafael the steward of Vivi becomes her adviser, intermediary, and administrator: he helps her move discreetly, assesses the risks of acting under her own name, and converts her intentions into practical steps. Their alliance is marked by familiarity, but not simple trust. She values his judgment and depends on his work, while still recognizing that he scrutinizes people—including, perhaps, her.

A Partnership Built on Secrecy and Judgment

The scale of Rafael the steward of Vivi's preparation is clearest in the identity he arranges for her meeting with Archmage Aeris. She visits as Nysari Keresi, a demonic noblewoman of the First Blood, rather than under the much more conspicuous name Vivienne. Rafael has spent years cultivating the identity and secured permission from House Keresi itself. The disguise gives her a credible political standing: the First Blood is comparable to a ducal family, enough to ensure that The Institute cannot casually dismiss her request for an audience with Archmage Aeris.

That concealment is more than a convenient alias. Vivi / Vivisari Vexaria has recently learned that her achievements during the Cataclysm Campaigns elevated her from Second Blood to honorary Primogenitor’s Blood, a status that makes her, by title, a demonic princess. She is still coming to terms with the consequences of being publicly known as Vivisari. Rafael's carefully fostered cover therefore offers room to act before her return becomes a public event, and reflects his instinct to manage reputation and exposure before either can become a liability.

Their strategic approaches are not identical. Rafael advises against surprising Archmage Aeris without a disguise, arguing that a surprise could reveal character but warning that an unannounced visit might provoke a dangerous confrontation. Vivi / Vivisari Vexaria, by contrast, is curious about what spells the retired archmage might use if startled. She recognizes that indulging that curiosity would be an inappropriate way to approach a potential ally. The exchange shows Rafael acting as a restraint on her impulses, not by denying her power but by making the likely political and personal costs visible.

Return, Reunion, and Vanguard's Work

Rafael is present when Vivi / Vivisari Vexaria reunites with Miraelle, who has been going by Mae. Mae says Rafael has already caught her up, and reaches toward Vivi as if to confirm that she is really there before drawing her hand back. Rafael watches from the side and nods when Vivi looks his way. His role in this moment is quiet but consequential: he has helped carry news across the long separation, while leaving the reunion itself to the two former companions.

The reunion also exposes the difference between personal feeling and institutional business. Rafael does not rush to interrupt their initial exchange, but once the conversation stalls, he redirects attention to Vanguard's first restoration stage. Its completion, he explains, requires Miraelle's induction. He then checks that she genuinely wants to rejoin and invites them to continue in his office. Miraelle's answer makes clear that she has avoided other guilds for a reason, though she still wonders whether she is welcome. Vivi assures her that she is. Rafael supplies the procedure that allows that assurance to become an organizational decision: the old alliance is being rebuilt through concrete membership, not sentiment alone.

Stewardship in a Political Dispute

Vivi / Vivisari Vexaria also turns to Rafael for help with Saffra's expulsion from The Institute and the imprisonment of William Trent. She suspects that the accusations against Saffra were largely fabricated, though she admits she has no proof. The legal matter appears settled by the expulsion, but William Trent, a gold-rank adventurer, has spent six months in a cell after insulting Duke Caldimore. Vivi wants him freed before Saffra learns what happened and blames herself.

Rafael responds by separating the problem into its political and personal components. He identifies the Caldimores as a family best avoided politically and notes that Duke Caldimore has the legal advantage. At the same time, he considers the Duke rational enough to change course if the disadvantages become greater than the benefits. Rather than urging Vivi / Vivisari Vexaria to exercise her formidable power, he proposes a sufficient donation as the most efficient first approach. If that fails, he reminds her that she is borrowing the name of House Keresi and that its influence is available to support her.

The advice reflects both his political competence and his awareness of their present vulnerability. He warns Vivi / Vivisari Vexaria that she can no longer act as a rogue force without consequences: the Cataclysms no longer provide the authorities with a reason to tolerate whatever a powerful individual chooses to do. Her return and Vanguard's return are not yet ready to be announced, and Rafael's own involvement would raise questions. In his assessment, timing and discretion matter as much as leverage. When Vivi asks him to move quickly because she fears Saffra will blame herself, he promises to handle the matter with the utmost expedience. His stewardship thus accommodates urgency without abandoning calculation.

Trust, Authority, and Continuing Alliance

The partnership is close, but the narrative does not present it as uncomplicated confidence. Rafael appears to trust no one implicitly, perhaps not even Vivi / Vivisari Vexaria; she has the impression that his scrutiny extends even to the craftsmen around them. His caution is not framed as disloyalty. It is part of how he serves her: he gathers information, anticipates repercussions, and keeps an eye on people and plans that could compromise their position. Vivi / Vivisari Vexaria, for her part, accepts his warning about political restraint and asks for his advice, even while acknowledging that she does not yet understand the full scale of her new importance.

Their roles endure even when the stakes rise beyond guild restoration or a prisoner’s release. After Vivi / Vivisari Vexaria displays power so overwhelming that observers might imagine a god has descended to intervene, she returns immediately to a practical instruction for Rafael: find out what he can about the situation. She teleports away before waiting for his response, and he turns his attention to his own mission. The moment preserves the alliance's familiar division of labor: she acts on a vast scale, while he remains behind to investigate and manage what follows. Their bond is therefore not simply that of a returned legend and a devoted attendant; it is a durable governing partnership in which her force and his judgment address different parts of the same crisis.
